La Canada Flexes Its Might on All-Area Basketball Teams : Girls’ team: Spartan junior Melissa Lord is named player of the year.

In what has become a trend, Glendale-area girls’ basketball teams experienced another successful season in Southern Section and City Section competition.

Diversity of talent characterized the area’s 12 teams that compete in six different leagues and divisions.

That diversity is reflected in the 10 players chosen to The Times Glendale All-Star team.

The 10-player team was selected based on ballots received from area coaches, who were asked to nominate their own players and opposing players and to select a coach of the year.

The Glendale area produced two lords of the court this season.

Melissa Lord, a junior from La Canada, was selected player of the year. Drew Lord of Eagle Rock, no relation to Melissa, was selected coach of the year after guiding his team to a 13-4 record and third consecutive league championship.

The players along with their parents and coaches will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast Sunday at the Pasadena Hilton.

Here is a look at the players on the 1992 team:

Jennifer Dalton, Glendale--Dalton, a senior who was the Glendale-area player of the year in 1991, had another outstanding season. She averaged 17.6 points a game and helped Glendale win the Pacific League title.

Nancy Evans, Hoover--Evans, a junior, averaged 19 points for the Tornadoes and was named first-team All-Pacific League.

Maria Fulay, Marshall--Fulay, a junior who is the latest in a growing line of talented Barrister players, averaged 15 points and was selected All-City in the 3-A Division.

Laurel Hitchin, Eagle Rock--Hitchin, a senior, missed a few games because of injuries, but she averaged 10 points and eight rebounds and helped lead the Eagles to their third consecutive league championship.

Melissa Lord--Lord, a junior who made the All-Glendale team last year, proved unstoppable to most opponents. She averaged 19.6 points and set a school record with a single-game high of 40 points in a 60-37 victory over Monrovia.

Karen Pindron, Flintridge Sacred Heart--Pindron, a senior, was the steadying influence for the Tologs, averaging 12 points and nine rebounds.

Shawna Sherburne, Flintridge Prep--Sherburne, a senior, averaged 13.7 points and 10 assists for the Rebels. She set a school single-game record with 21 assists.

Makela Theriault, Verdugo Hills--Theriault, a senior, averaged 20 points for the Dons.

Susie Woo, Franklin--Woo, a senior, averaged 19 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Tracy Young, Glendale--Young, a junior, averaged 16 points and was selected first-team All-Pacific League.
