Experience paid off for those chosen to The Times’ 1992 South Coast Prep Boys All-Star Basketball Team.

Seven of the 10 all-stars are seniors. The other three--all juniors--were standout players as sophomores.

Topping the list is off-guard Jamal Lawrence of Lynwood High, the player of the year. He averaged 20.1 points and 5.7 rebounds in leading the Knights to the San Gabriel Valley League championship and into the finals of the Southern Section I-AA Division playoffs.

Wilson High’s Jim Ferguson, who guided the Bruins to a 21-8 season record, was selected coach of the year.

Members of the team will be honored during a breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Hotel in Cerritos.

The team was chosen primarily on the basis of ballots cast by area coaches. Here is the South Coast team:

Jamal Lawrence, Lynwood--The 6-foot-1 senior also averaged 2.1 assists for the San Gabriel Valley League champions, who were 11-1. He was a good shooter with catlike moves. He led the Knights (25-6) with 7 rebounds against top-ranked Mater Dei of Santa Ana in a 67-65 loss in the opening round of state playoffs. He has signed to play at Pepperdine. Lawrence was the co-most valuable player of the San Gabriel Valley League and edged out several top players for South Coast player of the year honors because of his work ethic. “He was willing to acknowledge his weaknesses and work on them to get better,” Coach William Lee said.

Rodney Malloy, Lynwood--The 6-foot-3 junior guard who averaged 17.3 points, nearly 4 rebounds and 3.2 assists was voted all-San Gabriel Valley League. In the state playoff game with Mater Dei, he led the Knights with 27 points and made three 3-point shots. “He brings a lot of skills to the game. He really has no weaknesses,” Lee said.

Sharif Metoyer, Poly--A 6-foot senior point guard on a 16-15 team that was not expected to go as far as it did in the playoffs. Metoyer led the Jackrabbits into the semifinal round of the Southern Section I-AA Division playoffs before losing to Lynwood. Metoyer scored 15 points in a 56-47 quarterfinal victory over league rival Wilson. He is considering attending Texas Christian or Cal State Long Beach. The senior averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 assists.

Larry McGlothin, Dominguez--Another all-San Gabriel Valley League performer. The 6-foot-6 1/2 senior forward averaged 11 points and 9 rebounds. He opened the playoffs with a 22-point effort in a 53-50 victory over Inglewood. “A top power forward,” said Coach Jim Chapel of Cerritos. McGlothin is considering making recruiting trips to Fresno State and Drake.

Everett Ratleff, Jordan--Co-MVP of the Moore League. He is a quiet, steady 6-foot-1 junior swingman who scored 33 points in the Panthers’ final two Southern Section playoff games. Wilson Coach Ferguson ranked Ratleff as the area’s top player. He led his team with 13 points in a 67-55 loss to Capistrano Valley in the semifinals of the Southern Section I-AA Division playoffs. Jordan finished with a 22-7 record.

Javon Rouzan, Lakewood--Shared Moore League MVP honors with Ratleff. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound senior center averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds. He scored 21 points in a 66-60 upset loss to Alhambra in the Southern Section I-AA playoffs. He is very coachable. “He has done everything we have asked of him in his three years here, and I feel that this season he was the most dominant player in the Moore League,” Coach Tim Sweeney said. Rouzan is considering Pepperdine or USC.

Peter Sverkos, Wilson--Third in balloting for MVP in the Moore League. He is a 6-foot-2 junior guard who averaged 15.4 points and 3.9 assists. “A good kid,” according to Ferguson. He carries a 3.56 grade-point average.

Brandon Titus, Gahr--The 1991 South Coast player of the year was chosen co-MVP of the San Gabriel Valley League this season. A 6-foot-4 senior guard, he averaged 24.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3 assists. He scored 41 points in the Gladiators’ two II-AA playoff games. His jumper at the buzzer fell off the lip of the rim in his team’s second-round loss to Tustin. Coach Larry Shelton of Downey High listed Titus as the area’s top player.

Wil Weir, Centennial--A 6-foot-7 senior forward who averaged 14.3 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists. One of the most athletic players on the team, he helped the Apaches reach the semifinals of the Southern Section III-AA playoffs by scoring 41 points in three games. He also had 9 rebounds in two of those games, including a 50-46 loss to Estancia of Costa Mesa in the semifinal game. Weir wants to attend USC.
