Julian Smilovitz, an assistant at La Mirada High School, has been named varsity football coach at Fullerton. Smilovitz succeeds Pat Ward, who resigned in January to return to the Chino Unified School District.

Smilovitz, a sales representative for Federal Supply Corporation, had been a walk-on assistant at La Mirada since 1984. He will join Fullerton’s faculty after spring break and teach in the English department.

Smilovitz attended Brigham Young from 1971-75 and was an offensive lineman. He was a sophomore football and varsity baseball coach at American Fork High in Utah after graduating college.

Smilovitz assisted at Norwalk Glenn in 1982 and Lakewood Mayfair in 1983 before joining La Mirada’s staff as offensive line coach and junior varsity baseball coach in 1984.

Fullerton’s football team was 1-8-1 last year and was outscored, 125-43, in five Freeway League losses.
