Agoura Girls Win Honors in Academics

The Agoura High varsity girls’ cross-country team has been selected the 1991 Southern Section team academic champion.

The Chargers had a combined grade-point average of 3.81 in college core classes. They won their second consecutive state Division I title in November and were the No. 1-ranked high school team in the nation by The Harrier magazine. The team will be honored before Wednesday’s Angels-Chicago game at Anaheim Stadium.

Andre Chevalier, a guard on the Cal State Northridge basketball team, has received an academic achievement award sponsored by a national insurance company. Chevalier posted a 3.2 grade-point average. The sophomore from Cleveland High led the Matadors in assist average (3.7) and free-throw shooting percentage (86.8).

The Harvard Water Polo Foundation club team defeated a team from Japan, 11-4, Thursday at Harvard-Westlake High. Jim Gotcher, a freshman at Harvard, scored a team-high two goals.

Sharon Petzold overcame an upset stomach to outscore reigning world ski champion Ellen Breen of West Hills and win the women’s ballet event Thursday in the U.S. freestyle ski championships.

Breen, 28, placed second.
