BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newbury Park d. Alemany, 15-12, 15-5, 15-11--Panther junior Paul Niedermuller did not start in the nonleague match. And he didn’t like what he saw from the bench as the host Panthers fell behind, 12-3, in game one.

But Niedermuller, normally a starting outside hitter, emerged from the bench in time to score three kills and the last eight service points of game one. He finished the match with eight kills and two blocks. Senior outside hitters Ryan Grady and Tommy Sheehan each added 10 kills for the Panthers (6-2).

“I was just concentrating on putting the ball down and then on getting down my swing,” Niedermuller said.

Newbury Park used the momentum of its early comeback to cruise in the second game, and Alemany (6-4) was unable to take advantage of another slow start by the Panthers in a sloppy third game.

The Indians received 10 kills from outside hitter Ariel Bernardo. Sophomore middle blocker Chris Engler got off to a strong start for Alemany with four first-game kills, but he was held to three kills and one block the rest of the match.
