HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Sandoval Hurls No-Hitter for St. Genevieve

Share

Jose Sandoval had a peculiar feeling in his right arm Saturday night.

“It’s sore and tired,” he said, “but it feels good.”

Sandoval, a 5-foot-8, 130-pound freshman at St. Genevieve High, pitched a no-hitter in his first varsity start as the Valiants defeated Buckley, 11-1, in a consolation-bracket makeup game of the Los Angeles Baptist baseball tournament Saturday.

“After the first inning I knew I was pitching well,” Sandoval said. “My fastball was getting in the right locations. My curve was not getting over, so I relied on the fastball and changeup.”

Sandoval was called up last week and played two games at second base. On Saturday he was expected to pitch no more than four innings.

“We kept telling him there was no pressure,” Coach Scott Smith said. “Hopefully after a game like this there will be no problem with his confidence.”

The jitters were most apparent during the seventh inning when Sandoval walked the first two batters. After a talk with Smith, Sandoval settled down. Buckley scored its only run on a groundout.

Sandoval struck out four, walked three and hit one. He was aided by a double play, and catcher Sergio Ramos threw out a runner trying to steal.

Sandoval helped himself with two hits, two walks, two runs and two runs batted in. In three varsity games Sandoval has six hits.

Fernando Barba had three doubles, two RBIs and one run for St. Genevieve (4-5).
