Foothill, which entered the season as the No. 1-ranked team in Orange County, has struggled at times because of illness and injury and dropped to No. 10 in the county poll, but Gonzalez finished last week with three strong performances, helping the Knights to their first softball tournament title in school history. Friday, Gonzalez struck out 10 in nine innings to lead Foothill to a 2-1 victory over then-No. 1 and previously undefeated Mater Dei. Saturday, she struck out eight and allowed four hits in a 1-0 victory over Pacifica and then struck out 11 and allowed four hits in a 3-1 victory over Cypress, ranked No. 2 and also previously undefeated. For the week, Gonzalez was 4-1 with 38 strikeouts. She walked two batters and allowed one earned run. “She was really fading at the end of the Cypress game but she struck out the last batter of the game,” said Joe Gonzalez, Foothill coach and Leeann’s father. “I’m glad she had that one left.”

Other top performers:

Erica Ebel, who was named the athlete of the Beaumont Invitational, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 13.24 and 27.62 seconds and leading Orange Lutheran to the team title.

Kelley Green, who was named offensive player of the Cypress tournament after driving in two runs in Foothill’s 3-1 victory over Cypress in the title game.
