BOYS’ ATHLETE OF THE WEEK : Steve Hagins

Share

School: University High

Sport: Baseball

Position: Catcher

Class: Junior

Hagins, a second-team, All-Sea View League catcher as a sophomore last season, gained about 20 pounds during the off-season, which could be bad news for the league’s pitchers. There was a hint of just how bad Tuesday when Hagins drove in eight runs in the Trojans’ 14-5 victory over Woodbridge. Before the game, Hagins had only one home run in three seasons as a varsity starter. Tuesday, he hit two home runs, including a grand slam. “He’s probably one of the strongest kids in our school including our football players,” University Coach Chris Conlin said. Friday, Hagins drove in the deciding run in University’s 5-4 victory over Corona del Mar, a victory that evened the Trojans’ league record at 2-2. For the week he was seven for 14 with 10 RBIs and six runs scored.

Other top performers:

Robert Besanson, a Westminster pitcher who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Huntington Beach, then ranked No. 1 in the county, before settling for a four-hitter in a 6-3 victory. Besanson also had two doubles, two hits and two RBIs in an 8-4 victory over Chino.

Charlie Davidson, a Saddleback sprinter who won the 100, 200 and 110 high hurdles and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team in the Roadrunners’ 75-61 victory over Woodbridge. Davidson’s 14.2 time in the 110 hurdles is among the best in the Southern Section this season.

Eric Peterson, Barry Martin, Robbie Wilkins and Bryan Shapiro, University High tennis players who swept their doubles sets in the Trojans’ victories over Corona del Mar and Beverly Hills.
