HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL : Mira Mesa Applies Brakes to Serra Rally

Mira Mesa, ranked third in San Diego County, needed extra innings to get past Serra, 4-3, in a City Eastern League baseball game Thursday.

The visiting Marauders got two singles off losing pitcher Joe Rayoan (0-1) in the eighth inning. A passed ball and Brian Wilson’s two-run double supplied Mira Mesa with the runs it needed. Wilson finished two for four with three RBIs.

Serra rallied in the bottom of the eighth, getting a run-scoring single by Milo Rodriguez--his third RBI--and had the tying and winning runs on base when the game ended.

Ram Barrera had two hits and an RBI for Serra (5-8, 1-1).

Coleman Mullin hit a one-run homer for Mira Mesa (11-2, 2-0).

In another City Eastern game:

Point Loma 4, Patrick Henry 3--Point Loma was outhit, 4-3, but moved to 7-7-1, 1-1. Eric Bromley (3-1) went the distance. Patrick Henry (4-7-2, 0-2) got its runs on a three-run homer by Eric Slama. Starter Chad Pagni and Justin Lay combined on a three-hitter for the Patriots, but Pagni lost.

City Central League

Crawford 12, San Diego 1--Brian Gaske went four for four with a double and two RBIs for Crawford (3-6, 1-0), and teammate Rafell Jones iced the game with a three-run triple in a six-run sixth inning. San Diego fell to 5-6, 0-2.

Madison 10, Hoover 2--Losing pitcher Damian Morrison homered for Hoover (1-9, 0-2). Madison scored in every inning but the fourth.

City Western League

Mission Bay 10, Kearny 0--Sophomore Jeff Dufek pitched a three-hitter and allowed only four baserunners for Mission Bay (6-4, 1-1), which got a two-run double and three-run triple from Danny Gill, and three hits and three RBIs from Shane Stroberg. Kearny is 4-8-1, 0-2.

City Harbor League

Coronado 12, Marian Catholic 4--Winning pitcher Tucker Tupek (3-0), a freshman, had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs; Kyle Smock had two hits and three RBIs; and Corey Laulon had two hits and two RBIs for Coronado (7-5, 2-0).

Metro Conference

Sweetwater 2, Chula Vista 1--Chula Vista’s Octavio Java had a one-hitter going into the sixth inning, but Sweetwater then touched him for three hits and both runs. Winning pitcher Daniel Mireles threw a four-hitter. Chula Vista is 3-7, 0-4.

Mar Vista 2, Hilltop 1--Mar Vista’s Carlos Quinones drove in one run with a hit and scored another to make a winner of left-handed starter Ricky Quinones (no relation). Dimas Acevedo got his first save, and teammate Andy Moreno had an RBI double. No. 10 Mar Vista is 9-3-1, 3-1. Hilltop scored on Juan Garcia’s home run.

Montgomery 7, Bonita Vista 6--Bonita Vista (5-6-1, 2-2) got seven extra-base hits (five doubles, two triples), but couldn’t overcome the seven-run lead that No. 1 Montgomery (11-0, 4-0) built in the first two innings. Carlos Acuna went three for four, scored twice and drove in two to lead the first-place Aztecs.

Castle Park 6, Southwest 2--Catcher Kiko Palacios homered, doubled, had three hits, drove in two runs, scored once, stole two bases and threw out two runners attempting to steal to lead Castle Park (4-5, 2-2).

Coastal League

La Jolla Country Day 11, Santa Fe Christian 2--Jamie Blake (3-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings of two-hit relief for LJCD (6-4, 3-0). Todd Graves had three hits, two RBIs and scored once, and Aaron Rubenson had three hits and scored three times.

Nonleague

St. Augustine 8, University City 5--Craig DaLuz homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and winning pitcher Pete Albers had three RBIs for St.Augustine (9-2). University City is 4-7.
