HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Extra-Inning Win Keeps Alemany Tied for League Lead, 6-5
Chris Gallagher singled with two out, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Kevin Tate’s single to right in the ninth inning as visiting Alemany High kept pace with Notre Dame in the Mission League baseball race by beating St. Paul, 6-5, on Saturday.
Alemany and Notre Dame share the league lead with 5-1 marks.
Tate (3-0) threw 3 1/3 innings of relief to get the victory. He pitched out of bases-loaded jams in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Greg Kmet started for Alemany and gave up four unearned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Kmet has yet to allow an earned run in 24 innings.
Mike Najar had four hits and two runs batted in and Dave Castillo added three hits and two runs for Alemany (10-4-1 overall).
Bishop Montgomery 3, Chaminade 2--Brian Powers tied a school record with his eighth home run of the season and Ted Corcoran gave up just one hit in five scoreless innings, but the host Eagles (3-11, 0-6) still came up short, losing their 10th game in a row.
Chaminade’s bullpen faltered in the sixth inning of the Mission League game when Bishop Montgomery (4-10, 3-3) scored three runs to break a scoreless tie. Powers hit his two-run homer in the bottom of the inning.
Crescenta Valley 5, Canyon 1--Josh Canale pitched a three-hitter--striking out five and allowing no earned runs--in a first-round Babe Herman tournament game. Canales also knocked in two runs and Josh Willis added two hits, including a double, for Crescenta Valley (5-6-1).
Glendale 9, Highland 6--A seven-run second inning propelled Glendale into the second round of the Babe Herman tournament. Max Medina and Mark Haft each had two hits and scored two runs for Glendale (5-4).
Ladd Stilson, Ryan Golphenee and Tom King each had two hits for Highland (5-7).
Westlake 3, Burbank 1--Three Westlake pitchers combined to stop Burbank on three hits in the first round of the Babe Herman tournament. Scott Singleton (2-1) got the win with three innings of one-hit relief.
Rico Lagattuta had three hits and Josh Kurczeski added two for Westlake (6-6).
Harvard-Westlake 13, Salesian 1--Jon Schaeffer had three hits, including a three-run homer, and knocked in four runs for Harvard-Westlake in a nonleague game. Todd Lemkin added three hits and two RBIs for host Harvard-Westlake (8-4 overall).
