COLLEGE ROUNDUP : McMillin Powers Cal Lutheran to Sweep of La Verne

Darrell McMillin slammed a three-run homer in the fifth inning of the second game Saturday, sparking Cal Lutheran to a 9-4 victory over La Verne and completing a sweep of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at La Verne.

CLU (29-2 overall, 14-1 in conference play) won the opener, 14-8.

McMillin’s homer, his 17th, broke a 2-2 tie. A three-run double by Mike Suarez highlighted a four-run ninth inning that gave the Kingsmen breathing room.

Jeff Berman (2-0), making his first start of the season, struck out 12 and scattered four hits in seven innings. Louis Birdt pitched the final two innings for his third save.

The Kingsmen broke open the first game with nine runs in the first three innings. Jay Lucas and Eric Johnson each had four hits and two runs batted in to lead an 18-hit attack.

La Verne (16-11, 8-6) rocked CLU pitcher Steve Dempsey for eight runs, including four in the ninth, but Dempsey held on to finish the game and earn his ninth win without a loss.

In other baseball games:

Cuesta 6, Ventura 4--Robbie Weeks scattered eight hits and gave up three runs in 6 2/3 innings as he beat Ventura for the third time in two seasons. The loss dropped the Pirates a game behind Pierce in the Western State Conference standings with two to play.

Cuesta (10-8 in conference play) got its leadoff hitter on base in the second through sixth innings and again in the eighth and scored each time.

Ventura (20-9, 13-5), which committed three errors, allowed only one earned run. The Pirates stranded 11 runners, including two in the ninth.

Valley 13, Santa Monica 2--The Monarchs turned six Santa Monica errors into six runs in a WSC game at Valley.

Manny Fernandez (4-3) struck out five and allowed four hits in six innings. Mario Joy closed with three hitless innings to pick up his first save.

Steve Knez went two for three with an RBI for the Monarchs (15-17-1, 10-8-1).

The Master’s 7-3, Biola 2-5--E.J. Pape had two doubles, a single and two RBIs, and Andy Martin socked his fourth home run as The Master’s won the opening game of a National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 doubleheader at Biola.

Biola pounded four Mustang pitchers for 13 hits in winning the nightcap.

Master’s is 11-21, 8-7 in district play.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 14-8, Occidental 0-0--The Regals pounded out 22 hits while giving up only six--all singles--in an SCIAC doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Marjie Sievers (8-5) held the Tigers to one hit and struck out six in the first game, which was stopped after 4 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.

In the second game, the Regals (17-10, 13-3) turned six hits and two walks into six runs in the fifth inning to take a 8-0 lead. The Tigers (0-20, 0-14) were limited to five hits by Stacy Donaldson (9-5).
