PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Irvine Wins in 11th to Reach Final

Mark Conner’s sacrifice fly in the 11th inning gave Irvine a 9-8 victory over Corona del Mar in a semifinal of the Pride of the Coast Tournament Tuesday at Corona del Mar High School.

Todd Thomas scored the winning run for Irvine (11-6), which meets La Mirada in the championship game at 2 p.m. at Estancia High. La Mirada defeated Estancia, 3-2, in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

Corona del Mar rallied for two runs in the sixth to tie the score, 6-6. The tying run scored on Todd Kehrli’s single.

In other Pride of the Coast games:

El Modena 9, Artesia 0--The first seven batters for El Modena (7-5-2) singled in a seven-run first inning at Newport Harbor High.

Orange Lutheran 10, Costa Mesa 3--Tim Hunt had a two-run single during a three-run third inning for Orange Lutheran (10-3). Costa Mesa is 4-12.

Century 2, Rancho Alamitos 1--Nick Garcia knocked in one run and scored another for Century (4-9). In the second inning, Garcia doubled, moved to third on an error and scored on a single by Hector Martinez. In the sixth, Garcia’s bunt single scored Osiel Madrigal from third for the go-ahead run. Marshall Brown had a third-inning home run for Rancho Alamitos (4-8).

Newport Harbor 3, Bolsa Grande 1--Freshman Mike Buist (2-3) pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine, for Newport Harbor (5-9-1). Ryan Anderson had two hits, two stolen bases and an RBI for the Sailors (5-9-1). John Baughman had an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh for Bolsa Grande (4-11).

In the Coachella Valley tournament:

Capistrano Valley 13, Yucaipa 4 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Ethan Wychoff went two for three with two runs scored and an RBI and Brian Benner was two for four for Capistrano Valley (12-3).

In the West Anaheim Lions tournament:

Westminster 2, Savanna 1--Matt Murphy’s squeeze bunt tied the score, 1-1, in the top of the seventh, and Mike Ebrecht stole home with the winning run for Westminster (8-10) at Glover Stadium. Robert Besanson (3-1) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts.

Sunny Hills 11, Canyon 3--Steve Ashton hit a two-run home run in the five-run third inning for Sunny Hills (9-8). Matt Wood’s single in the third drove in Matt Kastelick with Canyon’s final run.

Kennedy 4, Troy 2--Chris Clark pitched a five-hitter, striking out six while allowing one earned run and Rich Lyon had two hits with a run scored for Kennedy (12-4) at Brookhurst Park. The victory was the 100th of Kennedy Coach Chris Pascal’s career.

In the semifinals of the Santa Ana tournament:

Gahr 9, Mission Viejo 3--Brian Darwin homered and scored three runs and Larry Seigler added two hits and three RBIs at Valencia High as Gahr Coach Tom Bergeron won the 400th game of his career. Gahr (10-6) advances to the championship game against top-seeded Diamond Bar at 2 p.m. today at Rancho Santiago College.

Diamond Bar 5, Saddleback 3--Aaron Armstrong, who finished with four RBIs, hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to give Diamond Bar (14-1) a 5-3 lead. Tony Zuniga’s groundout in the third inning brought in Jimmy Fernandez to put Saddleback (13-3) ahead, 3-2.

Los Alamitos 5, Santa Ana Valley 0--Cory Barnett had two doubles and an RBI and Rob Crenshaw had three hits and two RBIs for Los Alamitos (7-10). Mike Hook pitched a complete game and forced 13 groundouts for the Griffins, who play Buena Park in the 1:30 p.m. consolation final today at Santa Ana High.

Buena Park 2, Villa Park 1--Alfredo Garcia (4-1) pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts at Villa Park High to lower his ERA to 1.25. Geno Robles had a squeeze bunt and Richard Cabral an RBI single as Buena Park (6-7) scored twice in the sixth. Scott Henderson allowed seven hits and had nine strikeouts for Villa Park.

Foothill 7, Valencia 6 (8 innings)--Jason Vlcek’s sacrifice fly drove in Keo Powell with the winning run for Foothill (10-5). Mike West’s earlier sacrifice fly drove in Mike Lorge with the tying run for Valencia (10-5).

Santa Ana 6, Trabuco Hills 2--Joe Mata was two for three with a double and a triple and scored two runs for Santa Ana (3-12). Robert Pedroza was two for two with three RBIs for Santa Ana, which led, 5-0, after two innings. Trabuco Hills is 9-7.

Pacifica 6, Orange 2--Dave Anderson had three hits and three RBIs and Howie Taylor had two hits and two RBIs to lead Pacifica (10-7). Josh Dean (3-2) pitched a six-hitter, striking out five.

Laguna Hills 8, Perris 6--The Hawks scored three runs in the top of the fifth to break a 5-5 tie. Mike Messinger had an RBI single to give Laguna Hills (9-6) a 6-5 lead. Messinger then scored on a double by Jeramy Gillen, who scored on the play after a throwing error.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 14, Servite 1--Billy Blanton went three for three with three runs scored and three RBIs and Darren Troilo hit a three-run home run in the fourth to highlight a seven-run inning that gave the visiting Monarchs (14-1, 8-1 in league) an 11-0 lead.

Blanton hit a three-run home run off Servite’s Adam Anderson in the first inning.

The Monarchs also turned a triple play in the fourth. With runners on first and second, second baseman Dave Knuff caught a line drive, stepped on second, then threw to first baseman Don Matthewson for the third out.
