Several Area Basketball Players Earn State Honors

Four area girls and two boys were among those chosen to the All-State high school basketball teams by Cal-Hi Sports.

Michelle Palmisano of Thousand Oaks, Lauren Goldstine of Westlake, Kim Schielke of Palmdale and Suzi Shimoyama of North Hollywood were selected to the girls’ squad.

Marquis Burns of Reseda and Lance Fay of Buena were among the 30 players picked for the boys’ squad.

Burns, a 6-foot-4 guard, was The Times’ All-Valley player of the year. The UCLA-bound senior averaged 26.6 points and 8.8 rebounds.

Fay, a 6-1 senior guard, was the area’s leading scorer with a 29.2 average and made several game-winning shots. He was named The Times’ All-Ventura County player of the year.

Burns and Fay also were Cal-Hi’s All-State Division I picks.

Palmisano, a 5-10 senior point guard who will play for UCLA next fall, finished her high school career as the fourth-leading scorer in state history with 2,795 points. She was named The Times’ Ventura County girls’ player of the year for the second year in a row.

Goldstine, who will attend UC Santa Barbara, is Ventura County’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,241. Shimoyama, who will attend California, averaged 11.2 points, 7.7 assists, 5.7 steals and five rebounds.

Schielke, a junior point guard, averaged 14.5 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Palmisano, Schielke and Shimoyama also were named to Cal-Hi’s All-State Division I team. Goldstine was selected to the All-State Division II squad.

Six other area players were selected to Cal-Hi’s various divisional and grade-class All-State teams.

Chris Cole (6-4 senior forward) of Santa Clara and Tim Sebek (6-4 senior guard) of Nordhoff made the boys’ Division IV team. Austin McKellar (6-2 senior guard) of Campbell Hall was named to the Division V squad.

North Hollywood’s Damon Ollie (6-4 forward) was selected to the boys’ all-sophomore team.

Marion Jones (5-11 forward) of Thousand Oaks made the girls’ all-junior team and Michelle Giordano (6-0 forward) was chosen to the girls’ all-sophomore squad.

Bob and Mike Bryan, 13-year-old twins from Camarillo, each advanced on Tuesday to the round of 16 in the Easter Bowl tennis tournament at Doral Resort in Miami.

Bob, seeded second, defeated Jeff Bergman of Bethlehem, Pa., 6-0, 6-2. Mike, seeded fourth, defeated David Chang of Spring Valley, N.Y., 6-3, 6-0.

Bob faces No. 11 Ron Nano of Great Neck, N.Y., today and Mike faces Ramsey Smith, son of former Wimbledon champion Stan Smith.

Smith is from Hilton Head, S.C.

The final of the age-14 tournament will be held Saturday.
