HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Channel Islands, Ventura Reach Tournament Final

Channel Islands High used power and defense while Ventura relied on tenacity but both posted wins Tuesday to advance to the final of the Thousand Oaks baseball tournament.

Channel Islands (14-2) relied on the big bats of Johnny Olivares and Alex Zavala to down Lompoc, 12-3, in a second-round game in the morning. The Raiders then defeated the Thousand Oaks junior varsity team in third-round play, 8-1. Fred Criscavage and Ysidro Alfaro provided the key hits in that win.

In the first game, Olivares was four for five with four runs batted in and Zavala went two for five with two RBIs.

On the mound, Zavala improved to 3-0 by scattering three hits through the first five innings. Zavala was also helped by several strong defensive plays.

In the second game, Criscavage and Alfaro, normally reserves, stole the spotlight. Criscavage was two for four with two RBIs and Alfaro had a two-run single.

Playing because of injuries, Alfaro is five for seven with six RBIs in the Raiders’ three tournament wins.

Ventura used Chris Mace’s two-run single in the seventh to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win against Agoura in another third-round contest. The Cougars (8-9) meet Channel Islands today at 2 p.m. in the tournament final.

The Cougars took advantage of two walks and a pair of passed balls to start their winning rally.

Lyle Camarillo led off with a walk and went to second on the first passed ball. Derek Swafford also walked and both runners move up on another passed ball before Mace singled them in.

Agoura pitcher Joe Smith held Ventura to three hits, but still took the loss. The Chargers, who beat the Thousand Oaks junior varsity, 13-7, earlier in the day, fell to 5-9.

In other Thousand Oaks tournament games:

Montclair Prep 12, Newark Memorial 1--Montclair Prep got an outstanding pitching performance from Russell Oritz to defeat Newark Memorial and reach the third-place game today at 2 p.m. against Pasadena.

Ortiz hurled a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Mounties (9-4-1).

Chris Portugal was two for four with three RBIs and Chris Ferebee was two for two with two doubles and two runs scored for Montclair Prep.

In other tournament action: the Thousand Oaks varsity defeated Santa Paula, 7-1; Pasadena beat Santa Paula, 5-2; and Lompoc bested Pasadena, 13-11.

In other baseball games:

Las Vegas Eldorado tournament--Kevin Lohman had five hits and Ted Corcoran had four hits for Chaminade, but the Eagles dropped a pair of games in pool play.

After losing to Eldorado, 7-4, in its first game, Chaminade (3-14) came within inches of winning its second game against Valley of Las Vegas, but Darin Goka’s line drive to left field with two runners on base in the 11th inning was caught at the fence for the final out of a 10-8 loss.

Chaminade trailed, 8-7, but tied the score in the bottom of the 10th when John Lucas stole home on a double steal.

Valley countered with a two-run home run off Corcoran (0-1) in 11th inning to hand Chaminade its 13th consecutive loss.

Oak Park 8, Santa Ynez 2--Oak Park pitcher Eric Pryor was double trouble for Santa Ynez in a semifinal game of the Santa Maria tournament at Santa Ynez.

On the mound, the senior right-hander went the distance, striking out five and allowing three singles. At the plate, Pryor went three for four with four RBIs.

The Eagles (8-4) will play Cabrillo for the championship today at 2:30 p.m. at Santa Ynez High.

Moorpark 14, St. Bonaventure 2--Doyle Ritchie went four for four with four runs scored and three RBIs to guide the host Musketeers (11-0, 6-0) to a Tri-Valley League win. Eddie Romero was three for four with three runs scored and two RBIs for Moorpark.

Santa Clara 5, Fillmore 3--Justin Villa and Chris Macias of Santa Clara scored on an errant throw with no outs in the seventh inning to snap a 3-3 deadlock in a Frontier League game at Fillmore.

Cate 7, Calabasas 3--Calabasas (4-6) committed seven errors and allowed six unearned runs to score in a nonleague loss at Cate.

Josh Morton, previously a reliever, started for the first time and scattered five hits in three innings, struck out four and walked none. He tired and left with a 3-1 lead before Cate scored two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 4, Ventura 2--Dayna Skinner went three for three and scored twice and teammate Jessica Cunningham had two hits and two RBIs for the Pioneers in the championship game of the Righetti tournament at Lakeview Complex in Santa Maria.

Michele Castonguay (5-0) was named most valuable player in the tournament after holding the Cougars (10-4) to six hits and striking out three.

Simi Vallley (16-1) reached the tournament championship by edging Irvine University, 3-1, in 10 innings.

Both teams scored a run in the ninth, but the Pioneers took the lead for good, 2-1, when Sara Griffin doubled to right center to score Jasmine Budhu from third. Griffin scored the insurance run one batter later on a Castonguay double.

Griffin (11-1) surrendered just five singles and struck out eight.

El Camino Real 6, Taft 1--Three hits and an error allowed the visiting Conquistadores to score four unanswered runs in the seventh inning of a Northwest Valley Conference game at Shoup Park.

Jennifer Gould and Jessica Dinaberg each had two hits and Gould (7-4) struck out four, walked none and surrendered just five singles in going the distance for El Camino Real (7-4, 1-0).

Reseda 4, Chatsworth 3--Jayme Rebbeck pitched a complete game and Michelle Brewer drove in three runs with a double and triple as host Reseda (7-2, 4-1) won a Northwest Valley Conference game. Brewer’s two-run triple in the fourth gave Reseda a 4-2 lead.

La Reina 13, Carpinteria 1--Freshman Shane Anderson struck out 13 in a two-hitter as host La Reina (8-4, 3-1) won a Tri-Valley League game.

Erin Petrick went two for two with two runs batted in for La Reina, which had eight hits and benefited from four Carpinteria errors.

Canoga Park 5, Van Nuys 4--Jacque Stafford doubled and scattered five hits in seven innings as host Canoga Park (5-0, 1-0) won a Mid-Valley League game.

Sylmar 11, Birmingham 0--Ruby Gonzalez (7-0) struck out 10 and yielded just three singles for the Spartans in a Mid-Valley League game at Sylmar (10-3, 5-0).

Monica Cruz led Sylmar with two hits and three RBIs.

San Fernando 10, Kennedy 2--Claudia Soto scattered eight hits over seven innings as host San Fernando (8-5, 1-0) won a North Valley League game.

Lorena Hernandez went three for three and Melissa Larios went two for two for San Fernando. Hernandez’s three-run double high-lighted a four-run third inning that put San Fernando ahead, 9-1.

Harvard-Westlake 9, Immaculate Heart 3--Lindsay Sloane pitched a no-hitter for Harvard-Westlake in an San Fernando League game at Vallley College.

Sloane (6-4) also was handy with a bat, going two for three with two RBIs for the Wolverines (6-4, 2-2).

Whitney 13, Campbell Hall 2--Whitney won a Delphic League game at Campbell Hall behind a nine-run fifth inning.

John Pallak allowed four runs on nine hits through four innings before tiring in the fifth, when the first six batters reached base.

Scott Bobic tripled and Jason Hill had two doubles for Whitney. Andreas Fehrle led Campbell Hall with two hits in three at-bats.

Canyon 14, L.A. Baptist 1--Carmen Villasenor allowed one run on five hits in four innings to pitch Canyon (10-3) to a nonleague win at Cal State Northridge.

Crystal Bostos went five for five with a double, triple, three runs batted in and three runs scored for Canyon. Kari LaMasters had two doubles, two runs and three RBIs.

BOYS’ TRACK

El Camino Real 94, Chatsworth 32--Jaffers Bailey stormed to victories in the 440 yards and 120-yard high hurdles for the Conquistadores (5-1) in a West Valley League meet at home.

Bailey, a state-meet qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles a year ago, won the 120-yard highs in 14.8 seconds and took the 440 in 50.8. Both marks are season bests for Bailey, who also ran the first leg on the victorious mile relay team (3:38.0).

Justin Martin was a double-winner for El Camino Real in the 100 meters (11.0) and the 220-yard dash (23.4), and he ran the first leg on the winning 440-yard relay team (45.6).

Teammate John Golden won the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet 6 inches.

Reseda 75, Taft 52--Drue Powell won two individual events and ran legs on a pair of victorious relay teams for Reseda in the West Valley League meet at Taft.

Powell, timed 15.1 to win the 120-yard high hurdles, and 42.9 to place first in the 330 intermediates. He ran the third leg on the Regents’ 440-yard relay team, which timed 43.8, and the anchor leg on the mile relay, which ran 3:40.3.

John Kubelka had the top mark of the meet for Taft, clearing 13 feet to win the pole vault.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Kennedy 87, Granada Hills 30--Yeko Ladzepko and Shameya Harris each won two individual events and contributed to relay victories for the Golden Cougars (6-0, 6-0) in a North Valley League meet at Kennedy.

Ladzepko won the 110-yard low hurdles (16.4) and long jump (14-9) and anchored the 440 relay team to a 53.2 clocking.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 4, Chatsworth 3--The Highlanders’ Casey Wood, ranked 75th among Southland boys aged 18-and-under by the Southern California Tennis Assn., upset 19th-ranked Rafael Huerta, 6-4, 6-4, to spark Granada Hills in a Northwest Valley Conference match at home.

Buckley 16, Flintridge Prep 2--Josh Goodley, Phil Abramson and Norman Little swept their singles matches to guide the host Griffins (5-5) to a nonleague win.

VOLLEYBALL

Crespi d. St. Bernard, 15-2, 15-3, 15-13--Bill Rojas had 14 kills to spark the host Celts (8-3, 8-1) to a Mission League victory. Mike Leas added 12 kills and Nick DiPasquale had 11 to pace a balanced Crespi attack.

Camp Kilpatrick d. Stephen Wise, 15-1, 15-2, 15-2--Chris Morland had seven service aces and Art Franklin added six kills to lead the host Mustangs (8-6) to a nonleague win.

L.A. Baptist d. Viewpoint, 15-9, 15-4, 15-3--Dan Felman had seven kills and four blocks to pace the Knights (5-5) to a win at Viewpoint.
