Cal State Northridge’s Gil Carrillo had a superb series Saturday when he placed second in the men’s javelin in a triangular meet against Houston and host UCLA.

The junior from Moorpark College entered the meet with a personal best of 222 feet 2 inches, but he exceeded that mark four times, topped by his 229-5 effort. Carrillo averaged 224-5 in six throws. Junior Garrett Noel set the Northridge record of 231-11 in the same meet. . . .

Northridge had season bests in 13 events in the meet. The men produced season bests in four events, the women in nine. . . .

The region’s two fastest collegiate men’s 400-meter relay teams compete for junior colleges. Valley has a best of 40.5 seconds and Moorpark has timed 40.80. Northridge has clocked 41.00.

Baseball: Entering the final stages of Western State Conference play, Ventura second baseman David Frazier is second in the race for the conference batting championship with a .422 average (27 for 64). Cuesta’s Jason Luttges (.447) ranks first. . . .

Brian Smith, Robby Welles and Jason Cohen of Pierce continue to rank 1-2-3 in runs batted in in conference play with 22, 21 and 19, respectively. . . .

Canyons relievers Shawn Bowen and Doug Maggiora rank 1-2 in earned-run average in conference play. Bowen (2-0, 0.61 ERA) has yielded one earned run in 14 2/3 innings, and Maggiora (1-1, three saves, 1.29 ERA) has given up two runs in 14. . . .

Right-hander Eric Raba (8-0, 1.000) and left-hander Mike Eby (7-1, .875), both of Pierce, have the top two winning percentages among starting pitchers in the region. . . .

Cal Lutheran (29-2, 14-1 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) leads Redlands (12-3 in SCIAC play) by two games in the standings, and Kingsmen players dominate SCIAC statistical leaders. Darrell McMillin leads in batting average (.473) and home runs (seven), and Mike Suarez leads in RBIs (23). In pitching, starter Mike Winslow leads in ERA (1.59 in 17 innings), and Louis Birdt is second among relievers (1.29 ERA in seven innings). Cal Lutheran also leads conference teams in batting (.367) and pitching (1.95 ERA).

Softball: Eleven of 13 players on the Cal Lutheran softball team are batting at least .265. The Regals are led by Brenda Frafjord (.394).

Golf: Cal Lutheran (9-4) has won two SCIAC dual matches by forfeit. Caltech forfeited Tuesday and Occidental forfeited Feb. 6.
