The Glendale area features several dominating softball pitchers this season, including the well-publicized Stacy Atwood of Crescenta Valley and Nancy Evans of Hoover.

But also making strong showings this season are Franklin’s Danica Parra and La Canada’s Lindsay Parker.

Parra, a sophomore, has been impressive in leading the Panthers to an 8-2 record entering this week.

Parra has given up only five hits and recorded 45 strikeouts in her last 25 innings while compiling a 0.28 earned-run average during that span. Parra pitched a no-hitter against Lincoln and has two other shutouts.

Parker, a freshman, pitched a no-hitter as the Spartans defeated South Pasadena, 8-0, Friday. She had eight strikeouts and issued one walk as La Canada improved its Rio Hondo League record to 2-2.

Glendale-area all-star basketball teams came up short Saturday in the fourth annual games against all-stars from the Burbank area.

Austin McKellar of Burbank scored 16 points to lead his team to an 84-80 victory at Glendale College.

Mike Wright led Glendale with 19 points.

Burbank had no problems in the girls’ game, winning, 78-63.

Susan Woo of Franklin High led Glendale with 20 points.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team entered the week 11-20 overall and 6-12 in Western State Conference play after going 1-2 in the Channel Coast tournament last week.

The Vaqueros conclude their WSC schedule with games today at Stengel Field against Pierce and Saturday at Bakersfield.

The Glendale men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to Ojai today for the start of the Ojai tennis tournament.

The Vaqueros will resume their regular schedule April 30 when they take part in the Western State Conference playoffs. The Southern California Regionals begin May 7, and the state finals will be held May 14 at a site to be determined.

The Vaquero men’s and women’s track teams will participate in the Western State Conference finals Friday at Bakersfield College.

The Southern California Prelims will be held May 2 at Santa Barbara and the Southern California Finals will be held May 9, with the season concluding at the state championships in Long Beach on May 15-16.

Lee Balkin, an assistant track coach at Glendale, finished in seventh place in the invitational men’s open high jump Sunday with a leap of 6 feet 10 3/4 inches at the Mazda Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

COLLEGES

The Occidental College men’s and women’s track teams will travel to Fresno State on Saturday for a triangular meet against Fresno State and the Air Force Academy.

The Tigers are preparing for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships April 30-May 2 at Caltech.

Last weekend, the Occidental women beat Claremont and Caltech in a triangular meet.

Jacqui Dent won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races for the Tigers. Mashairi Dunn of Occidental finished second in all three events. In the javelin, Sequoia Johnson won with a throw of 115 feet 7 inches.

The Occidental men lost to Claremont but defeated Caltech. Konstantine Kindreich won the 1,500-meter event and Gunnar Miller won the pole vault with a season-best vault of 16 feet.

The Occidental baseball team resumes its SCIAC schedule Friday when the Tigers meet Pomona-Pitzer for the start of a three-game series.

Occidental entered the week 12-16, 4-10 in the SCIAC.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jason Greenberg, Glendale--Greenberg, a senior right-hander, pitched a three-hitter as Glendale defeated Crescenta Valley, 3-1, in a Pacific League game on Friday.

Greenberg’s performance helped the Dynamiters enter the week with a record of 6-6 overall and 3-4 in league play.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Konstantine Kindreich, Occidental--Kindreich won the 1,500 meters for Occidental during a triangular meet against Claremont and Caltech Saturday.

Kindreich has already qualified for the NCAA Division III nationals.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Donna Mayhew--Mayhew, a former standout track athlete at Crescenta Valley High and Glendale College, won the women’s javelin event at the Mazda Mt. San Antonio College Relays last weekend with a throw of 206-2.

MISCELLANY

Westlake High won the Babe Herman high school baseball tournament held last week at Stengel Field. Westlake defeated West Torrance, 12-3, to win the championship.
