HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Diaz Allows 1 Hit in Poly’s Victory Over Sylmar, 4-0

Eric Diaz allowed just one single as Poly High shut out Sylmar, 4-0, Thursday in an East Valley League baseball game at Sylmar.

Diaz (5-2) allowed a second-inning single, the lone inning in which he was in trouble. He escaped the one-out, bases-loaded jam with a pair of strikeouts. Diaz struck out four, walked two and hit two. For Poly, the victory completed a two-game sweep of Sylmar (8-9, 6-4 in league play) this week.

Jesus Perez was two for three for Poly (11-4, 8-2.

In other baseball games:

Notre Dame 5, Cardinal Newman 4--Chris Garza (8-0) struck out 12 and walked five as Notre Dame (11-5-1) finished seventh in the St. Paul tournament.

Garza also was two for three with two runs batted in. Rich Igou pitched the seventh and struck out two to earn his second save.

Grant 29, North Hollywood 1--Grant (11-4, 9-1) battered North Hollywood by scoring 11 runs in the first and at least one run in every inning in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Grant’s Rusty Howard was five for five and drove in four runs; teammates Justin Howard and Jim Guth each had three hits and four runs batted in; Nick Oriti had three hits and Peter Chong hit a grand slam and finished with six RBIs.

Van Nuys 12, Canoga Park 10--Juan Colon and Patrick Alvarado each had three hits to lead Van Nuys in a Mid-Valley League game at Lanark Park.

Monroe 7, Birmingham 0--Junior right-hander Jorge Dorado threw a five-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one in a Mid-Valley League game at Monroe.

Noel Toledo had three hits and scored two runs, and Christian Ascencio had a two-run single to pace the Vikings (10-3-1, 8-2).

Verdugo Hills 7, Wilson 5--Steve Hernandez threw a three-hitter, struck out nine, walked three and allowed two earned runs to lead visiting Verdugo Hills in a Northern League game.

Matt Fitzgerald drove in three runs with a first-inning single that sparked a five-run rally.

BOYS’ TRACK

Quartz Hill 91, Antelope Valley 44--Ramon Banks and Bryan Frazier each won two events for visiting Quartz Hill to help the Rebels clinch their first boys’ Golden League title since 1980.

Banks won the 100 meters in 11.0 seconds, the 220 yards in 22.6, and ran the first leg for the victorious 440 relay team, which timed 44.4.

Frazier timed a personal best of 15.1 in the 120-yard high hurdles, and leaped 43 feet 3 inches in the triple jump for Quartz Hill (5-0 in league meets).

Jamaal Chase won the high jump (6-0) and the long jump (20-11) for Antelope Valley (1-4).

Agoura 62, Royal 55, Newbury Park 53--Agoura (7-0) held off upset-minded Royal (6-1) and host Newbury Park (3-4) to win its first Marmonte League dual-meet title.

Scott Mitchell, Agoura’s only double winner, took the 100 meters (10.9) and 220 yards (22.8). Newbury Park’s Jeff Wilson won the 880, mile and two mile in 1:59.0, 4:22.5 an 9:36.4. Teammate Sean McKeown claimed the shot put (49-10) and discus (162-2).

Monroe 69, Van Nuys 57--Monroe’s Jeff Nadeau set personal bests of 22 feet 2 inches in the long jump and 43-1 1/2 in the triple jump, and he tied his personal best of 6-0 in winning the high jump in the Mid-Valley League meet.

Melvin Clark of Monroe (6-1) won the shotput with a personal best of 49-0 3/4.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Quartz Hill 107, Antelope Valley 10--Cheaza Figueroa and Tahara Martin won three events to help visiting Quartz Hill (5-0) clinch its fourth consecutive Golden League title.

Figueroa won the 440-yard dash in 62.4, the 110-yard low hurdles in 15.7, and the long jump with a region-leading 18-7. Martin had a unique triple, winning the 100 meters (13.2), the 880 yards (2:47.1) and the triple jump (34-5).

Crescenta Valley 73, Hoover 43--Nada Kawar of Crescenta Valley, the defending Southern Section 4-A Division champion in the girls’ shotput, highlighted the Pacific League meet at Hoover with a personal best of 41-8 1/2.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 7, Channel Islands 1--The Pioneers scored five runs on five hits and a walk in the sixth inning to bury visiting Channel Islands in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Park.

Yody Roache hit a two-run single and two triples for Simi Valley (18-1, 9-0).

Thousand Oaks 6, Westlake 0--Carrie Russell relieved freshman Jenny Lee in the third inning and earned the win in a Marmonte League game. Nicole Ochoa was three for three, including a run-scoring single for host Thousand Oaks (9-4, 7-1).

Hoover 4, Arcadia 2--Pitcher Nancy Evans threw a six-hitter, striking out 16, and Shannon Feliz had two-run single in a three-run first inning in a Pacific League game at Arcadia.

Saugus 3, Antelope Valley 1--Senior Kerry Coudry pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Saugus (18-1, 4-0) in a Golden League game.

El Camino Real 4, Chatsworth 0--Jessica Dinaberg had a two-run double and Heidi Crocker and Carrie Reulbach each had run-scoring singles in the first inning to lead the Conquistadores in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Pitcher Jennifer Gould hurled a two-hitter, striking out four and walking none for El Camino Real.

Granada Hills 13, Kennedy 0--Highlander pitchers Brandy Brennan and Jessica Shapiro combined for a no-hitter in a Northwest Valley Conference game at home. Brennan (5-1) struck out three before yielding in the fourth to Shapiro, who struck out nine.

Cleveland 6, San Fernando 0--Jill Preston threw a three-hitter and homered to lead Cleveland in a Northwest Valley Conference game at home.

Montclair Prep 14, Village Christian 10--Kendra Dousette’s second home run of the season gave the visiting Mounties a 14-7 lead in a Alpha League game.
