Southern Section, City All-Stars Set for Tip-Off Tonight

Several of the region’s top high school senior basketball players are scheduled to appear in the fifth Boys and Girls Club of the San Fernando Valley all-star games tonight at Pierce College.

The girls’ game will begin at 6:30 followed the boys’ game at 8:30. Both games will pit Southern Section players against City Section players.

Participants were selected from schools in Burbank and the San Fernando, Simi, Santa Clarita and Conejo valleys.

The boys’ game includes a handful of All-City standouts, including The Times’ Valley player of the year, Marquis Burns of Reseda. Other All-City players on the team are Casey Sheahan of Taft, Robert Hill of North Hollywood and Chris Dunbar of Chatsworth. The team is coached by Reseda’s Jeff Halpern.

The Southern Section boys’ team features Danny Alexander of Simi Valley, Andrew Borg of Thousand Oaks, Richard Dice of Alemany and Dan Prince of Quartz Hill. All were members of The Times’ All-Valley or All-Ventura County teams. The team is coached by Ed Chevalier of Thousand Oaks.

The City girls’ team, coached by Rich Allen of North Hollywood, includes Karen Berkowitz of Granada Hills, the City 3-A Division player of the year.

The Southern Section girls’ team features Rachel Corelli of Alemany, The Times’ Valley player of the year. The squad will be coached by Lisa Magorien and Loretta Claus of Chaminade.

Tonia Farley of San Gorgonio High has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Cal State Northridge next season.

Farley, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, is a five-sport athlete, participating in basketball, soccer, softball, track and volleyball.

Seniors Jason Webster and Angie Davenport have been named male and female athlete of the year, respectively, for The Master’s College.

Webster led the basketball team to a 21-11 record and the semifinals of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3 tournament.

Davenport played basketball and volleyball.

Academic awards were presented to basketball players Ted Hahs, who has a 3.82 grade-point average with a major in mathematics, and to Matt Thomas, who has a 3.89 GPA with a major in English.
