Kunishima, Ruiz Receive CSUN’s Top Swim Honors

Cal State Northridge honored 11 swimmers and divers last week at the team’s year-end banquet.

Seniors John Kunishima and Kathy Ruiz were named the school’s top swimmers. Kunishima holds five school records. Ruiz finished second in the 100-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference championships in February at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Selected as top newcomers were sophomore Jennifer Kunishima and freshman Steve Hoffman. Andrew LaRosa, Matt Johnson, Tricia Gibb and Erica Larson were named most improved first-year swimmers. Nicole Hudson was named most improved returning swimmer. Karen Kindred and David Lowham won the coaches’ awards.

Josh Oppenheimer, a 1987 Notre Dame High graduate, has signed with the Atlanta Eagles of the U.S. Basketball League.

Oppenheimer, who averaged 11.9 points and 6.3 assists his senior season at Notre Dame, was the Eagles’ third pick in last week’s draft. Oppenheimer played for the University of Rhode Island, Northern Arizona and Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he completed his final year of eligibility last season.

A golf tournament to benefit the Cal State Northridge football team will be held May 18 at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.
