Pierce College outfielder Joey Arnold, described by Coach Bob Lofrano as the “heart and soul” of a team that won its second straight Western State Conference baseball title, has been named the WSC player of the year at the annual coaches’ meeting.

Arnold, a 6-foot, 165-pound sophomore, batted .338 with 23 walks and four home runs during the 20-game WSC season. After separating his left shoulder in a game last Thursday, Arnold came back with two hits in a 7-2 win over Ventura on Saturday that gave Pierce the conference title.

He was joined on the all-conference squad by teammates Jason Cohen (infield), Erik Martinez (outfield), Robby Welles (designated hitter) and Mike Eby (pitcher).
