Melanie Iwamasa, a senior guard at Edison High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend UC San Diego in the fall, according to Edison basketball Coach Phil Abraham.

Iwamasa was a four-year starter at Edison, earning All-Sunset League honors the past two seasons. She averaged 14.4 points and made 48 three-point shots.

Iwamasa, who has a 3.7 grade point average, plans to major in chemistry at UC San Diego. She also considered offers from UC Riverside, San Jose State and University of the Pacific.

Aaron Taub of Foothill High School said Tuesday he has signed a letter of intent to compete for the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo track and field team.

Taub said he will receive a partial scholarship.

Taub anchors the 1,600-meter relay team at Foothill, which has the second-best time in the state this year (3 minutes 17.09 seconds). Until Saturday’s Orange County championships, he had the county’s best time in the 400 (48.75).

Murderer’s row: Huntington Beach’s volleyball team, ranked fourth in the county, goes on the road to play three tough opponents next week, the final week of the regular season.

The Oilers play at Laguna Beach on Monday, at Sunset League rival Edison on Thursday and at San Marcos, the defending 4-A champion, on Saturday.

Other big matches next Tuesday include Irvine at Capistrano Valley in a match that will likely decide the South Coast League title and Edison at Fountain Valley.
