Jerry DeBusk, an assistant men’s basketball coach at Chapman University, has been hired as the boys’ basketball coach at Santa Margarita High School, Eagle Athletic Director Rich Schaaf said.

DeBusk, a former head basketball coach at Newport Harbor, will also teach English at the school. He inherits a program that last season finished 18-8 and went to the second round of the Southern Section III-AA playoffs.

DeBusk, who two weeks ago was one of six applicants to be interviewed for the head coaching position at Chapman, replaces Roger Holmes, who started the Santa Margarita program with Schaaf when the school opened five years ago.
