Crescenta Valley, which is the alma mater of five former Southern Section basketball scoring leaders, may have inherited another this week.

Adam Jacobsen, the Southern Section’s all-time three-point field goal shooter, withdrew from Glendora High last week and enrolled Tuesday at Crescenta Valley.

The 6-foot-1 Jacobsen, a three-year starter for Glendora, was selected to The Times San Gabriel Valley All-Star team after averaging 17.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists last season. Jacobsen combined with sophomore guard Cameron Murray, The Times San Gabriel Valley Player of the Year, to help the Tartans win the Southern Section 2-AA Division championship.

“We’re glad to have him and he’ll have the opportunity to fill it up,” Crescenta Valley Coach John Goffredo said. “We’re excited and figure we have another CIF leading scorer on our hands.”

It’s been a championship year for Bill Whiting and Eagle Rock.

In the winter, Whiting coached the Eagle Rock basketball team to its first league championship since 1983.

Last week, Whiting guided the boys’ volleyball team to its first-ever Northeastern League championship.

Veronica Garcia, a junior catcher for the Franklin softball team, is batting .545 with 11 runs batted in for the Panthers.

Smbatyan and partner Samuel Torres also qualified for the regional in doubles.

Glendale distance runner Grace Padilla has signed a letter of intent to attend Adams State in Colorado.

Last fall, Padilla, a transfer from East Los Angeles College, placed fifth in the state community college cross-country championships. She helped lead Glendale to its first WSC championship in 10 seasons and a third-place finish at the state meet.

Padilla chose Adams State, which is moving from NAIA to NCAA Division II status in cross-country and track and field next year, over UC Irvine, Fresno State, Northern Arizona, Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Northridge.

“They were really, really excited and nice when I visited,” Padilla said. “I wanted to go somewhere closer, but the area seemed so quiet and peaceful and a perfect place for running.”

COLLEGES

The unrest in Los Angeles last week caused the postponement of several Occidental sports events.

The men’s and women’s track teams completed the first day of competition in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship meet at Caltech on Thursday, but were unable to compete Saturday.

The SCIAC meet will be continued Saturday, which might cause some logistics problems for Tiger Coach Bill Harvey, who must oversee the staging of Saturday’s annual Occidental Invitational.

More than 600 athletes, including Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Steve Lewis, will compete in a meet that begins at 4 p.m. with field events.

The Occidental baseball and softball teams were scheduled to conclude their seasons earlier this week against Claremont and Whittier, respectively.
