SOFTBALL : Fifth-Seeded Titans Will Be Host to Long Beach, Toledo
Cal State Fullerton was selected as the fifth-seeded team when the NCAA women’s softball selection committee announced the 20-team field Sunday for the 1992 championship tournament.
The Titans (43-18) will play host to No. 15 Cal State Long Beach (36-29) and No. 16 Toledo (39-20) starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The winners of the eight regionals advance to the College World Series May 21-25 in Oklahoma City.
UCLA (47-2) is top-seeded and will play host to No. 20 Utah (25-18). Second-seeded Arizona (53-5) plays host to No. 18 Michigan (37-22).
In the five remaining regionals:
--Fourth-seeded California (44-14) will play host to No. 13 San Jose State (33-22).
--No. 3 Fresno State (48-14), the Big West Conference champion, will play host to No. 9 Cal State Northridge (45-23), which is making its first appearance in the tournament since joining the Division I last season.
--No. 11 Kansas (42-8) will play host to No. 6 Oklahoma State (47-12) and No. 19 Western Illinois (22-14).
--No. 12 Southwestern Louisiana (40-10) will play host to No. 10 Florida State (59-7) and No. 8 Nevada Las Vegas (43-20).
--No. 17 Massachusetts (33-13) will play host to No. 14 Connecticut (40-8) and No. 7 Utah State (43-19).
The Big West sends six teams to the tournament.
