HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Down, 11-0, Harvard Rallies but Falls Short

Harvard-Westlake High fell behind by eight runs in the first inning, then mounted a valiant comeback attempt before falling to Estancia, 11-8, in a Southern Section 3-A Division wild-card baseball game Tuesday at Harvard.

Estancia (12-13) led, 11-0, after three innings, but Harvard (14-12) scored two runs in the sixth and six in the seventh.

Max Sank was three for four, including two doubles, and Damon Lapa had two hits and two runs batted in for Harvard.

Brian Given, Jon Schaeffer and Kevin O’Malley each added two hits for the Wolverines.

In other baseball games:

Monroe 5, Van Nuys 0--Jorge Dorado and Robert Ballester combined on a five-hitter and Noel Toledo drove in three runs as host Monroe (17-3-1, 15-2) won a Mid-Valley League game.

Dorado (7-1) pitched four innings, allowing two hits and walking one.

John Shellabarger and Marco Alvarado each had two hits for Monroe. Alvarado scored twice.

Toledo opened the scoring with a two-run single in the first and he added an RBI single in the fifth.

Monroe scored in the fourth on a double-steal attempt. Chris Stell was thrown out trying to steal second but Robert Perea stole home.

Sylmar 4, North Hollywood 0--Jimmy Lemos pitched six scoreless innings and drove in three runs for the Spartans (11-14, 9-8) in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Lemos’ fielder’s choice in the third knocked in Oscar Mendoza, who had singled. In the seventh, Lemos closed out the scoring with a single that drove in Oscar Mendoza and Jaime Cordero.

Sylmar scored its other run in the sixth. Anthony Martinez, who had singled, scored when Shane Rankin (two for three) reached base on an error.

Canoga Park 11, Birmingham 5--Luis Meza was three for four and David Kreider had three hits and went the distance for host Canoga Park (3-18, 2-15) in a Mid-Valley League game. Birmingham is 5-17, 5-12.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. California, 15-5, 15-6, 15-4--Steve Hodge had 13 service points and 10 kills, and Brett Osterhoudt added a team-high 11 kills for host Royal (19-0) in the second round of the Southern Section 3-A Division playoffs.

Travis Ferguson had 30 assists for Royal.

California finished 13-4.

Notre Dame d. La Canada, 8-15, 15-0, 15-7, 10-15, 15-11--Morgan Hay had 17 kills and six aces and Tom Stillwell added 16 kills and six blocks for visiting Notre Dame (16-1) in a second-round Southern Section 3-A playoff match.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Santa Barbara 18, Thousand Oaks 0--Santa Barbara (20-0), the top-seeded team in the Southern Section 4-A Division, easily eliminated Thousand Oaks (13-7) in a first-round playoff match.

Burbank 15, Fullerton 3--Doug Young, the Foothill League singles champion, won his three sets to improve to 58-4 for host Burbank (19-2) in the first round of the Southern Section 3-A playoffs.

Quartz Hill 17, St. Francis 1--Owen Goudie, a senior, improved to 60-0 in sets this season as host Quartz Hill (20-0) advanced to the second round of the Southern Section 2-A playoffs.

Nordhoff 9, Chaminade 9--Led by Derek Pope, who lost only one game in winning his three sets, Nordhoff (13-5) advanced to the second round of the Southern Section 2-A playoffs by outscoring Chaminade, 73-61, in games.

Chaminade finished 12-3.

Buckley 18, Brethren Christian 0--The singles play of Josh Goodley set the pace for Buckley (10-7), which advanced to the second round of the Southern Section 1-A playoffs.

SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 4, St. Joseph 0--Michele Castonguay hit a three-run triple in the fourth inning to put Simi Valley (23-2) on the scoreboard and lift the Pioneers over St. Joseph (9-13) in a Southern Section 5-A Division wild-card playoff game.

Sophomore right-hander Sara Griffin (13-1) threw a two-hitter and struck out eight. Griffin’s run-scoring single capped the scoring in the fourth.

Griffin and Castonguay each went two for three. Simi Valley will face Santa Maria in the first round Thursday.

Valley Alternative 15, Westside Alternative 13--Jennifer Huish struck out a school-record 13 in 4 1/3 innings for visiting Valley Alternative (2-1-1, 2-1) in a Magnet League game. Huish left the game in the fourth, returned in the fifth and earned the save.
