Four teams from the Glendale area qualified for the Southern Section baseball playoffs that began Tuesday with wild-card games and continue Friday with first-round games.

Glendale, which finished third in the Pacific League, opens the 5-A Division playoffs Friday at Hart. St. Francis plays Bonita Friday in a 3-A game.

Flintridge Prep defeated Ribet Academy, 10-4, in a Small Schools wild-card game Tuesday and will meet Cate in a first-round game Friday.

The Marshall boys’ volleyball team fell short in its attempt to win the City Section 3-A volleyball championship, losing to Venice in the final match on Friday at Cal State Northridge.

Meanwhile, Glendale, La Canada and Glendale Adventist won their opening-round matches in the Southern Section playoffs.

Nathan Callister had 22 kills as Glendale defeated Buena in five games in a 4-A match. The Dynamiters advanced to the second round against Peninsula.

La Canada swept Los Altos in three games in a 3-A match and advanced to the second round against Notre Dame. In a 2-A opener, Glendale Adventist defeated Flintridge Prep in five games, but Glendale Adventist was eliminated in its next match against Salesian.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Robert Nelson of Glendale College finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes 5.2 seconds at the Community College state championship meet Saturday at Long Beach City College.

Oved Aguirre was fourth in the men’s 10,000 (31:00) and sixth in the 5,000 (14:53.26).

America Rivas finished ninth in the women’s 5,000 in 18.32.1

Rivas and Glendale’s Grace Padilla were part of a five-runner team that won the women’s division at the Jimmy Stewart Relay Marathon Sunday at Griffith Park.

Padilla, who will attend Adams State in Colorado, placed fifth in the state cross-country meet for Glendale in November.

Glendale utility player Scott Wirz was selected to the All-Western State Conference first team by conference coaches.

Freshman outfielder John Horan was selected to the second team. Freshmen infielders Robert Mancilla and Mike Regan and freshmen pitcher Paul Gomez received honorable mention.

COLLEGES

Maro Najarian of Occidental College reached the consolation finals of the NCAA Division III women’s tennis championships at Kalamazoo, Mich., before losing to Jackie Aurelia of Kalamazoo, 6-0, 6-4.

Najarian lost her opening match of the tournament, then won two matches to advance to the consolation final.

The Tiger Club, Occidental’s booster group, will hold its annual Senior Recognition Dinner June 12 at the Castaway restaurant in Burbank.

Top senior scholar athletes will be honored at the event.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Cori Miller, Hoover--Miller won the girls’ 100-yard breaststroke event at the Southern Section swimming championships Saturday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Miller won the event in 1:06.41 to become the school’s first Southern Section champion.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

America Rivas, Glendale--Rivas finished ninth in the women’s 5,000 in 18.32.1 at the state Community College track-and-field championships at Long Beach.

MISCELLANY

Don Nygord of La Crescenta finished fifth in the free pistol event at the Olympic Trials last weekend at Chino. Nygord finished with 2,562 points. Darius Young won the event with 2,589.
