SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Andrea Schutte of Brea-Olinda didn’t want to pitch against Capistrano Valley’s Daniela Hugelshofer in the second round of the Southern Section Division 4-A softball playoffs Tuesday.

The opposing pitchers are friends, but that didn’t stop Schutte from helping the Lady Wildcats gain a 2-0 victory at Capistrano Valley High School.

Brea (19-6), which reaches the quarterfinals for the second time in four years, will play top-seeded La Habra, a 5-0 winner over Fontana, Thursday.

“I was really nervous today, but I did better than last week, when my pitches were not working,” said Schutte, who allowed six hits and struck out two. “But I was kind of apprehensive pitching to Daniela since we played summer ball together.”

Angela Hanes opened the fourth inning for Brea with a bunt single, and one out later, was sacrificed to second by Julie Baker. Kim Deck, who was two for three, hit the ball up the middle. Center fielder Danette Morris fumbled the ball, allowing Hanes to score and Deck to take second. Schutte then hit a ball that bounced off Morris’ glove, scoring Deck to make it 2-0.

Hugelshofer pitched a three-hitter, striking out five, but the Cougars couldn’t muster much offense to help their pitcher. In the seventh, after Morris’ pop up was caught by second baseman Deck and Heather Still grounded out, Schutte (13-6) struck out Deanna Pallo on a full count to end the game.

Capistrano Valley finished 12-11-2.

In other 4-A games:

La Habra 5, Fontana 0--Dani Ortega threw a four-hitter and struck out nine for visiting La Habra (24-2). Stefanie Bakke was one for four with an RBI for the top-seeded Highlanders, who will play Brea-Olinda in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Foothill 2, Diamond Bar 0--Leeann Gonzalez (21-5) pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts for visiting Foothill (23-7). She struck out the first five batters she faced and allowed only a fourth-inning single.

Freshman Michelle Churnock had three hits, three stolen bases and scored twice for Foothill, which will play Crescenta Valley, a 3-0 winner over Long Beach Millikan, in a quarterfinal game Thursday. She singled in the third inning, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on a single by Amy Tessman. Churnock added a two-out single in the fifth, then stole second and third and scored on Melissa Wielandt’s single.
