Roger Takahashi, who resigned as football coach at La Quinta after last season, said Tuesday he will be the offensive coordinator at Los Amigos next season.
Takahashi said a cutback in teaching positions at La Quinta prompted the move. His was one of five positions eliminated at the school. Takahashi said he will teach health education, physical education and driver’s education at Los Amigos, the same courses he now teaches at La Quinta.
“When they put you on the transfer list, you’re free to apply for another teaching position within the (Garden Grove Unified School) district,” Takahashi said.
Takahashi headed one of the most successful prep football programs in the county at La Quinta. He had a 39-27-0 overall record during his six seasons with the Aztecs and was 26-14-0 in Garden Grove League play. La Quinta won the league title in 1990 and was the Southern Section Division VI runner-up to Corona del Mar in 1989.
At Los Amigos, Takahashi will work with a promising group of players headed by second-year Coach Steve Bolton.
“It’s a big boost to our program,” Bolton said. “We are very lucky to have a coach like Takahashi. Everybody is excited here. The kids were buzzing about it in the locker room today after our first spring practice with some of the plays he’s already put in.”
