Millikan 9, Hart 1--Ty Hindman (7-1), who defeated Crespi in relief in the first round, threw a four-hitter as defending champion Millikan (19-5-1) won a second-round 5-A game. Hart (23-3) committed five errors, including two in the four-run second.

Sophomore Mike Adachi drove in Hart’s only run. Doug Distaso (6-1) took the loss.

Northview 4, Rio Mesa 2--Dave Hernandez won his seventh consecutive game as host Northview (18-7) knocked off top-seeded Rio Mesa (18-6-2) in a second-round 4-A game.

Hernandez (7-4) struck out five, walked one and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. He retired Jon McMullen, a .523 hitter, on a groundout to end the game.

Rick Talbott hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Steve Loaiza hit a run-scoring single in the second for Northview (18-7), the first-place team in the Valle Vista League.

St. Francis 4, La Mirada 3 (10 innings)--John Workman pitched a six-hitter and scored the winning run on a passed ball as host St. Francis (11-11) won a second-round 3-A game.

Workman (7-2) reached on a fielder’s choice and scored after Adrian Lelea’s single moved him to third.

St. Francis reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 1978 and will face Corona on Friday.

Lelea had three runs batted in. He doubled home Brew McGoldrick and Rudy Martinez in the third and singled home Martinez in the first.

Workman nearly ended the game with a double in the seventh, but Corby Foster was thrown out at the plate.

Chaffey 6, Palmdale 3--Harvey Cavarrubiaf had three hits--including a double and a triple--scored twice and knocked in three runs to pace host Chaffey in a second-round 3-A game. Each of Chaffey’s nine starters had at least one hit.

Mike Bond went three for three to lead Palmdale.

Fillmore 7, Paso Robles 2--Host Fillmore scored five runs in the third inning to wipe out a 2-1 deficit in a first-round 2-A game.

With the bases loaded and one out, Jerry Sandoval doubled home Jaime Duran and Richard Preciado to give Fillmore a 3-2 edge. Phillip Chessani followed with a single to drive in Raul Ruiz. Louie Garza then singled in Sandoval and Chessani for a 6-2 lead.

Sandoval finished with two doubles and three RBIs and Chessani and Garza each had two hits and two RBIs for the Flashes (15-4-1).

Duran (9-1) struck out eight and surrendered seven hits.

Fillmore will play San Marino on Friday.

Santa Maria St. Joseph 6, Santa Clara 0--Santa Clara was held to three singles as host St. Joseph (18-4-1) won a first-round 2-A game.

Larry Casteneda, Justin Villa and Fernando Garcia singled for Santa Clara (12-7-1).

The Saints’ biggest threat came in the third inning. But with runners on second and third and one out, Armando Maciel struck out and Fernando Garcia, thinking that was the third out, wandered off second base and was picked off.

St. Joseph scored each of its runs with two out.

Twentynine Palms 8, Faith Baptist 1--Bill Tenaflor hit two home runs to lead Twentynine Palms (19-5) in a first-round 1-A game.

Tenaflor hit a solo homer in the first and two-run homer in the sixth. Mike Parks hit a two-run double in the fifth.

Twentynine Palms had only five hits but was aided by six walks and four errors.

Faith Baptist (14-7) scored a run in the sixth on singles by Alex Estrada, Judd Grantow and Colby Carpenter.

Twentynine Palms will play Moorpark on Friday.

Village Christian 6, Tehachapi 2--Freshman designated hitter David Gustafson, promoted from the junior varsity, knocked in two runs in the second inning with a bases-loaded single up the middle to give the host Crusaders a 4-1 lead in a first-round 1-A game.

Right-hander Jason Robitaille (7-1), also a freshman, gave up four hits and struck out nine in going the distance for Village Christian (13-9) at Tujunga Senior Field.

Paul Lazano went two for three and Fletcher Austin had two hits and an RBI for Tehachapi.

Village Christian will play Oak Park in a quarterfinal Friday.

Oak Park 1, Orange Lutheran 0--Jeff Gibbons threw a four-hitter and hit a solo home run in the third, and shortstop Eric Pryor made two big defensive plays for visiting Oak Park in the 1-A first-round game.

Gibbons, a right-handed batter, went the opposite way for his first home run of the season on a 2-and-2 pitch. He struck out eight and walked two in raising his record to 10-1.

Orange Lutheran, the fourth-seeded team, had runners on first and second with two out in the sixth and ninth, but Pryor made stellar plays to end each inning.

In the sixth, he managed to field a bad-hop grounder and get the force at second, and in the ninth, he fielded a high chopper and gunned the runner out at first.

Crossroads 9, L.A. Baptist 2--Dan Ripoll’s triple and Rich Condon’s double keyed a six-run third inning as Crossroads (17-7) won a first-round 1-A game.

L.A. Baptist three-year starter Jason Baumsteiger (11-12) finished his prep career with two hits. In the sixth, he doubled home L.A. Baptist’s first run and scored the second.

Pasadena Poly 19, Queen of Angels 0--Joe Wilhelm’s two-out single in the fourth was Queen of Angels’ only hit in a second-round Small Schools game.

Three Pasadena Poly pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.

CITY SECTION

Granada Hills 4, Banning 1--Junior right-hander Matt Livingston logged a 52-pitch shutout after six innings but had to survive a sluggish seventh to pull out the win in a first-round 4-A game at Granada Hills.

Livingston yielded a run on a walk and two singles in the seventh, cutting the Highlanders’ lead to 4-1.

Livingston (8-3), who threw 24 pitches in the inning, then retired the next three batters, stranding two runners.

Sam Voita led off the second with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, and John Mayer knocked home two runs for Granada Hills (17-6), which will play San Pedro in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Chatsworth 4, Sylmar 2--Matt LaCour hit a three-run double in the bottom of the sixth to lead host Chatsworth (16-10) in a first-round 4-A game.

Brandon Nickens (7-2) threw a four-hitter and had seven strikeouts.

Sylmar led, 2-1, entering the sixth. Matt Gorman hit a one-out single and with two out, Scott Monatlik was hit by a pitch and Mark Lopez walked. LaCour’s double made it 4-2.

LaCour’s fifth-inning single set up Chatsworth’s first run, which scored on Bryan LaCour’s sacrifice fly.

Jose Villafana pitched a five-hitter for Sylmar (9-9).

Chatsworth will play Venice in a quarterfinal on Thursday.

Venice 2, Monroe 1 (12 innings)--With two out and runners on second and third in the 12th inning, Venice center fielder Jose Fuentes made a spectacular diving catch of Jorge Dorado’s long, high fly to preserve the Gondoliers’ 2-1 marathon victory in a first-round 4-A game at Monroe.

Venice pushed across the eventual winning run in the 12th when Ruben Mercado singled home Dan Pena, who was aboard on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Robert Ballester (5-1).

San Pedro 9, Birmingham 6--Casey Doherty had four hits and three RBIs for visiting Birmingham, but the Braves could not hold on to a 6-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings.

Lester Echeverria (two runs scored), Don Wingo (one RBI) and Todd Challgren (one run) had two hits each for Birmingham (6-18), which had upset Taft, 9-5, in the wild-card round of the playoffs last Friday.

Kennedy 6, Westchester 3 (nine innings)--The Golden Cougars (18-9) defeated visiting Westchester (19-8) to advance to a second-round game against Poly.
