HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL PLAYOFFS : Lemasters Scores 2 Runs as Canyon Beats Torrance

Keri Lemasters had two hits and scored two runs to lead Canyon High to a 3-1 victory over Torrance in a second-round game of the Southern Section 3-A Division softball playoffs at Canyon on Wednesday.

Lemasters, a junior, led off the fourth and sixth innings with singles and scored each time.

Junior right-hander Marianne Winchester (13-4) allowed five hits and struck out four to earn the win.

Canyon (18-8) will face Golden League-rival Saugus on Friday at 3 p.m. at a site to be determined.

In other second-round games:

Quartz Hill 2, Santa Fe 1 (11 innings)--Brandy Macias drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the 11th inning to force in Cindy Simms with the winning run in a 3-A game.

Host Quartz Hill (21-2) took a 1-0 lead in the third on a single by Kim Craykraft that drove in Christy Smith from second. Santa Fe evened the score with an unearned run in the fourth.

Smith was two for five, as was Lolita Allen. Senior right-hander Heather Meyer (15-2) struck out 12 and yielded six hits in recording the win.

Lancaster Bethel Christian 3, Campbell Hall 0--Sophomore right-hander Jamie Johnston (19-2) threw a two-hitter to lead Bethel Christian in a Small Schools Division game at Campbell Hall.

Johnston struck out nine and walked five for Bethel Christian (20-2), and teammates Jennifer Enstad and Jamie Kuete each had two hits and drove in a run.

Kasey Cannon (12-6) did not allow an earned run for Campbell Hall, but three errors led to three unearned runs for Bethel Christian.

Moreover, Campbell Hall (14-7) wasted bases-loaded opportunities in the second and fifth innings, stranding three runners each time.

Crossroads 9, L.A. Lutheran 2--Emily Cummins hit a bases-loaded triple to key a five-run third inning for visiting Crossroads (19-9) in a Small Schools game.

Crossroads’ Jessica Schulman finished with 14 strikeouts.
