The honeymoon can wait for David Toms.

Toms, a newlywed, matched the course record with an eight-under-par 63 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Jay Don Blake after the first round of the Kemper Open at Potomac, Md.

“I haven’t had time to work on my golf game,” Toms said. “I just haven’t been into it that much.

Toms, 25, and his wife, Sonya, arrived in the Washington area late Monday, one day after their wedding. Heavy rain prevented him from practicing on the TPC at Avenel course Tuesday, and he didn’t have a chance to play Wednesday because of the pro-am tournament. So he had no idea what to expect in the first round.

“I’ve got to pay for everything,” he said.

Wayne Levi, John Inman and Brad Fabel shot 65s and defending champion Billy Andrade had a 66.

Quarterback Mark Rypien of the Washington Redskins, given a sponsor’s exemption, shot an 80.

Judy Dickinson had four consecutive birdies on the back nine on her way to a six-under-par 66 and a one-stroke lead after one round of the LPGA Oldsmobile Classic at East Lansing, Mich.

Dickinson birdied the 12th through 15th holes, then parred in to stay ahead of Michelle McGann and Dottie Mochrie. Lauri Merten and Carolyn Hill were two strokes back in the 72-hole tournament over the 6,166-yard layout at Walnut Hills Country Club.

Defending champion Annika Sorenstam of Arizona shot a four-under-par 68 and took a three-shot lead midway through the NCAA women’s tournament at Tempe, Ariz.

Freshman Nicole Materne shot a 71 to help San Jose State take the team lead with a score of 589. Georgia is one shot behind, followed by Arizona at 591.

Sorenstam is at 140, three shots better than first-round leaders Vicki Goetze of Georgia and Audrey Wooding of Stanford, who each had 74.
