Is $65 Million Too Much to Spend for One Cup?
Congratulations to The Times for its sweeping and detailed coverage of the America’s Cup campaign. I especially appreciated the graphics explaining boat architecture, the race course and the strategies of winning.
One complaint I have was the implication that the cost of the America’s Cup campaign was indulgent, extravagant, elitist.
I don’t resent Bill Koch spending $65 million to win the America’s Cup--I applaud him.
Bill Koch’s $65 million provided income for employees and suppliers, and significantly advanced the technology of boat racing. Further, Bill Koch gave us excitement and national pride.
I think that goes beyond Mike Downey’s implication that Koch was indulging in a hobby.
