DowDell Named First Team All-American

Tyson DowDell of El Dorado High School was selected as a first-team outfielder on the Collegiate Baseball High School All-American team, which was announced Friday.

DowDell, who also pitches, hit .423 with four home runs. He was 6-1 with a 1.94 earned-run average.

Two other area players--John Ward of Huntington Beach and Cale Carter of Mater Dei--were honorable mention selections. Ward, a right-handed pitcher, was 9-0 with a 1.26 ERA. Carter, an outfielder, led Orange County with 33 runs scored. He stole 15 bases.

Bob Bernal, softball coach at University High, said he will take over as girls’ basketball coach at the school next season.

Bernal coached the girls’ junior varsity team the past two years and assisted Coach Doug Sorey on the varsity squad. He said Sorey resigned from the team but will remain a teacher at University.

Sorey had an 88-58 record with the Trojans the past six seasons. University was 16-9 last season and tied Newport Harbor for second place in the Sea View League with a 7-3 record.

Rosters for the first North/South All-Star softball game for Orange County’s senior high school players were announced.

The game, sponsored by Soroptimist International of Brea, will be played at 7 p.m. Monday, June 8, at Brea-Olinda High. Jami Shannon of Los Alamitos will coach the North, and Cary Baker from Fountain Valley will coach the South. Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for those under 18.
