School: Sunny Hills High

Sport: Track and field

Event: 3,200 meters

Class: Sophomore

Garritson hasn’t had much competition in her specialty--the 3,200. She won the Freeway League championship by more than a minute and won the Southern Section 2-A title by almost half a minute. But Friday at the Southern Section Masters meet, she was pushed by Maribella Aparicio of Fillmore and responded by winning in an Orange County record time. Garritson passed Aparicio with 700 meters to go and pulled away to win in 10 minutes 28.20 seconds, breaking the decade-old record set by University’s Teresa Barrios (10:29.03). Saturday, Garritson will go after the State title and again she’s likely to have strong competition. Milena Glusac of Fallbrook, who finished second in the 3,200 last year, will be there. Garritson, who has the fastest time outdoors this season, hopes she will run better than the fastest indoor time of 10:21.12 by Amanda White of Timonium, Md. “I think I’ll probably do better this week,” Garritson said. “I think I’ll break 10:20 or run a 10:20 flat. At least that’s what I want to do.”
