Holcomb’s most impressive statistic was that he allowed only 45 hits in nearly 70 innings. He won two games and saved another in the Southern Section 5-A playoffs. Holcomb’s only losses were to Huntington Beach in the Loara tournament and to Diamond Bar in the semifinals of the 5-A playoffs.

INFIELDER: CHAD LECKIE, La Quinta

Leckie was drafted in an undisclosed round by the Chicago Cubs and has yet to sign with a four-year college. He will graduate with a 3.75 grade-point average. He was among the county leaders in doubles (11) and scored 20 runs. He was a two-year starter, batting .310 as a junior.

PITCHER: CAREY SMITH, Trabuco Hills

Smith joins Irvine’s Scott Seal as the only juniors to earn first-team honors. He won 10 consecutive games before losing to Corona in the first round of the Southern Section 3-A division playoffs. Smith was the co-most valuable player of the Pacific Coast League with Laguna Hills’ Brett Nista.

OUTFIELDER: CALE CARTER, Mater Dei

Carter was named the most valuable player in the Angelus League and will graduate third in his class with a 4.5 grade-point average. He was taken in the 17th round of baseball’s amateur draft by the Cleveland Indians but will attend Stanford University. Carter also competed in the National Sports Festival.

PITCHER: JON WARD, Huntington Beach

Ward was the county’s strikeout leader with 109 and pitched a no-hitter against Bolsa Grande. He was the 30th player selected in the baseball amateur free-agent draft and was named the Sunset League’s most valuable player. He has signed with Cal State Fullerton after considering offers from USC and Pepperdine.

OUTFIELDER: RICH CROWE, Ocean View

Crowe was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in an undisclosed round of the draft but will attend Stanford. He hit one of the longest home runs in county history against Westminster, powering a ball well over the 360-foot sign in left-center field that landed between second and third on Ocean View’s freshman field.

PITCHER: ETHAN WYCKOFF, Capistrano Valley

Wyckoff established a school record with a 1.00 earned-run average, breaking Brett Snyder’s mark of 1.15 set in 1987. Wyckoff has been invited to play in the State all-star game this weekend in Fresno. He was the most valuable player of the South Coast League. He also batted .329 with 25 hits and 16 runs batted in.

OUTFIELDER: RYAN ROSKELLY, Valencia

Roskelly was an all-county football selection as a defensive back after helping Valencia win the Division VI championship. He was named the Orange League’s most valuable player after leading the league in most offensive categories. Roskelly was also selected the league’s male athlete of the year.

CATCHER: BRIAN LOYD, El Dorado

Loyd is the only catcher ever to bat leadoff at El Dorado. He has good speed which allowed him to steal 13 bases. Coach Steve Gullotti says Loyd has the best major league potential of any player he has coached. He signed with Cal State Fullerton after considering Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.

INFIELDER: ZACH ELLIOTT, Tustin

Elliott was a three-year starter for Tustin, starting as a first baseman as a sophomore and moving to shortstop the past two seasons. He signed a national letter of intent with UC Santa Barbara after considering offers from Notre Dame, USC and Cal State Long Beach. He led the team in every offensive category.

DESIGNATED HITTER: SCOTT SEAL, Irvine

Seal was a first-team selection as a running back on the all-county football team after leading Irvine to the Division II championship. He follows his older brother, Mike, who was a second-team selection as a pitcher last season and now plays at Loyola Marymount. Seal was also an effective relief pitcher with three wins.

FIRST BASEMAN: KYLE EVANS, Katella

Evans was the county’s home run leader with nine. He hit three home runs at spacious Boysen Park, which has longer outfield dimensions than Anaheim Stadium. Opposing pitchers often pitched around Evans, walking him 23 times. A second-team selection last year, he has signed with Cal State Fullerton.

INFIELDER: LUIS ESTRELLA, Saddleback

Estrella played five positions--pitcher, catcher, first base, third base and the outfield--for Saddleback but will become an outfielder in college. He will graduate with a 3.6 grade-point average and has been accepted at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He had a 6-4 record on the mound and struck out 78 batters.

UTILITY: TYSON DOWDELL, El Dorado

A repeat selection who batted .405 with four home runs and won seven games as a pitcher, including a one-hitter against Loara. DowDell competed for the West team in the National Sports Festival last summer but has yet to sign with a college team. He is being recruited by Brigham Young, UCLA and USC.
