Oak Park High senior right-hander Jeff Gibbons finished the season with 134 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings, an average of 1.52 an inning. He walked 48. Gibbons, who pitched five innings but came away without a decision in Friday’s Southern Section 1-A Division final against Cerritos Valley Christian, finished 11-1 with a 1.51 earned-run average.

Baseball: Think John Workman had much to do with St. Francis’ trip to the Southern Section 3-A Division quarterfinals? The Golden Knight senior gave up only two runs in 17 playoff innings. He pitched first- and second-round complete games, including a 10-inning, 4-3 victory over La Mirada in the second round. Workman also had six hits in 11 at-bats and scored the winning run against La Mirada. He plans to attend Pepperdine--the Waves are the newly crowned national champions--and will try to make the baseball team as a walk-on.

Softball: Simi Valley (26-3) was downright shocked when Cypress scored the game’s only run in the fourth inning of the Southern Section 5-A Division championship game Saturday. Before the title game, only Royal had scored on the Pioneers first. . . . All 23 games in the 5-A playoffs were shutouts.

Saugus pitcher Kerry Coudry had given up only five earned runs in 176 innings before giving up two in the eight-inning, 2-1 loss to Woodbridge.

Track and field: Eugene Dreher of Antelope Valley moved to ninth on the all-time region list in the boys’ long jump with a personal best of 23 feet 10 1/2 inches in the qualifying round of the state championships at Cerritos College on Friday. Dreher leaped 24-1 1/2 to win the state title Saturday, but it was a wind-aided mark and those are not counted for record purposes. Percy Knox set the region record of 25-5 1/2 as an Antelope Valley senior in 1987.

Cheaza Figueroa of Quartz Hill moved to sixth on the all-time region list in the girls’ long jump with a personal best of 19-4 in qualifying at the state meet. Quartz Hill’s Madette Smith set the region record of 20-11 1/4 in 1986. . . .

Marcus Stokes of Thacher became the first hurdler from the region since 1986 to qualify for the state finals in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300 intermediates. Stokes placed fourth in the highs in a wind-aided 14.17 seconds and he finished fifth in the intermediates in a personal best of 38.01.

This is the fourth consecutive year that at least one Agoura runner has finished among the top five in a distance race in the state meet. Freshman Amy Skieresz placed third in the girls’ 1,600 in 4 minutes 58.99 seconds, and junior Ryan Wilson finished fifth in the boys’ 1,600 in 4:13.25.

Statistics current through Tuesday.
