Former Laguna Hills High softball player Marianne Stahl, a junior outfielder at the University of San Diego, was named to the GTE Academic All-American team.

Stahl, an accounting major with a 3.62 GPA, was the only scholar-athlete selected from California. She batted a team-leading .376 this season.

Six Orange County high school players have been selected to the South team that will compete in the State seniors all-star baseball series, which is scheduled to begin Friday ) at Fresno Clovis West High School.

Pitchers Ethan Wyckoff of Capistrano Valley and Brandon Hoalton of Garden Grove; first baseman Mike Urbanski of Foothill; shortstop Zach Elliott of Tustin; third baseman Enele Scanlan of Santiago, and outfielder Luis Estrella of Saddleback will play for the South.

Gerry Sedoo of Foothill will co-coach the team with Dave Barrett of Oceanside. The teams will play a three-game series. Starting times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon Sunday.
