Volleyball All-Stars Live Up to Billing

In a high-school boys’ volleyball match that lived up to its expectations, the Blue team prevailed over the White in a five-game, see-saw battle in the San Diego County All-Star match Saturday at UC San Diego.

The final score: 15-5, 7-15, 15-13, 7-15, 15-11.

Matt Noonan from San Pasqual had 15 kills and Bonita Vista’s Grant Stencil added 11 for the Blue all-stars. Long Beach State-bound middle blocker Matt Suttie from San Pasqual had 11 kills and several more blocks and was named MVP of the White squad.

Helix’s Mike Downey had 18 kills and La Jolla’s Mark Danenhauer 15 for the White. Setter Jerald Burrows of Southwest was named MVP of the Blue.

In the girls’ game, the Blue team came from behind, winning the final two games, to beat the Red team, 9-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-13, 15-9.

The Blue team was sparked by Brett Hensel from Torrey Pines, a setter/outside hitter bound for Notre Dame, and Leah Williams of La Jolla, who is headed for Colorado. Middle blockers Allison Brady of Poway and Raimie Engleman of Monte Vista led the Red team.

Each of the all-star teams had 2-A and 3-A players on their squads.
