AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : North Hollywood Comeback Falls Short, 9-8

Van Nuys-Notre Dame scored in the first four innings and outlasted North Hollywood, 9-8, in an American Legion District 20 game Wednesday at Notre Dame High.

Van Nuys-Notre Dame jumped to a 9-1 lead before North Hollywood scored seven times in the fifth to make it close. The game was called after 5 1/2 innings because of darkness.

Jimmy Landress, Dave Supple and Eddie Romero each had two hits for Van Nuys-Notre Dame (7-0). North Hollywood is 2-5.

Notre Dame starter Chris Garza (2-0) gave up three hits, walked nine and hit a batter in 4 1/3 innings. Chris Leveque earned his second save.

In other District 20 games:

Encino-Crespi 5, Panorama City 4--Run-scoring singles by Eric Otey and Jeff Herrera keyed a three-run sixth inning for host Encino-Crespi (3-5) at Valley College.

Jeff Suppan (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, striking out three of four batters, to earn the win. Otey was two for three.

Granada Hills East 4, Studio City 0--Rick Nadeau stole home for Granada Hills East to highlight a three-run third inning at Monroe High.

Miguel Diaz pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Studio City pitchers Jorge Dorado and Joel Zamudio combined for 13 strikeouts.

Zamudio relieved Dorado with two out in the fifth and struck out the first six batters he faced. Dorado had seven strikeouts.

San Fernando 2, Reseda-Cleveland 0--Left-hander Jorge Gonzalez (1-0) pitched a one-hitter with one strikeout to lead San Fernando (5-2-1) at Cleveland High.

Gonzalez, who walked four, yielded only a second-inning double to Ruben Guerra. San Fernando’s Rob DiCastillo had a run-scoring triple in the first inning to drive in Jaime Nunes. Luis Rodriguez doubled in the third to drive in Richard Rodriguez.

Granada Hills West 4, West Hills 1--Granada Hills West scored three runs on sacrifice flies at Granada Hills High to improve to 6-0.

Dave Cipolla had a run-scoring single and Robert Vasquez lofted a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give Granada Hills West a 2-1 lead. In the second, Cipolla and Vasquez each delivered sacrifice flies.

Right-hander Matt Livingston (2-0) pitched five innings to earn the win. Rob Rundquist pitched the sixth and seventh inning.

Quartz Hill 9, Littlerock 3--Carl Grissom had two triples and a single in four at-bats, and Phil Kruger hit a solo home run in the sixth inning for host Quartz Hill at Antelope Valley College.

Mike Casuncad, Mike Caudillo and Angelo Sakelarios, who was two for two, all had run-scoring singles.

Right-hander Kyle Gross pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts to earn his first win against two losses.

Sepulveda 3, Valley South 0--Chris Ferebee had a two-run single in the first inning to drive in Ethan Parker and Jeff Shapiro at Birmingham High. Shapiro was two for three. Chris Churmura (2-0) struck out two and walked one in six innings. Reliever Aaron Mintz gave up a single and a walk in the seventh, then pitched out of the jam to earn his first save.
