Western Names Cavanaugh as Boys’ Basketball Coach

Matt Cavanaugh has been named boys’ basketball coach at Western High School, Principal Warren Stephenson said Tuesday.

Cavanaugh will replace Greg Hoffman, who will coach Marina next season.

Cavanaugh, 26, a graduate of UC Irvine and Long Beach Millikan High, coached lower-level teams at Cypress and Mater Dei before moving to Western. He will be in a walk-on position until he earns his teaching credential.

Tom O’Donoghue, Mater Dei assistant, has been named to replace Vince Brown as Tustin’s varsity baseball coach.

O’Donoghue, 28, coached Mater Dei’s freshman baseball team this season. He was Tustin’s hitting instructor in 1990 and 1991 and was the varsity baseball coach at Woodbridge in 1989.

O’Donoghue will continue to teach at Currey Middle School in Tustin and will be a walk-on coach at Tustin.

Richard Bradarich, sophomore basketball coach at Foothill last season, has been named to replace Jim Reames as the school’s varsity basketball coach.

Bradarich, 42, was a former head coach at Hawthorne High from 1980-82 and was an assistant at Pasadena Blair in 1984-85. He left coaching to enter private business from 1985-90 and then served as an assistant at Laguna Hills in 1990-91.
