AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Newbury Oaks Assumes District Lead

Robert Fick hit a grand slam in a five-run second inning to propel Newbury Oaks into sole possession of first place in District 16 with an 8-6 win over Camarillo A on Saturday at Newbury Park High.

Fick was three for five with five runs batted in and Ryan Kritscher had three hits, three runs and two stolen bases.

Newbury Oaks (9-1, 8-1 in district play) has won nine in a row after opening the season with a loss to Camarillo (8-2, 7-2).

Camarillo hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth but Tighe Curran came on in relief for Newbury Oaks and earned a save. Camarillo loaded the bases in the ninth, but Curran struck out three in a row.

SIERRA NEVADA CLASSIC

Westlake-Royal 9, Sparks, Nev., 3--Westlake-Royal (12-2) advanced to the final behind a seven-run fourth inning at the University of Nevada. Shane Slayton and Tim Wootton each tripled.

DISTRICT 20

Granada Hills West 5-7, Palmdale East 8-5--Palmdale East (8-3) had a five-run sixth inning to win the first game at Palmdale High. Heath McElwee was two for three with a home run and two RBIs and Gary Matthews was two for two for Granada Hills West.

Sepulveda 10-16, Burbank 3-4--Brad Fullmer hit three home runs for Sepulveda (10-3) at Burroughs High.

West Hills 10-3, Granada Hills East 9-13--West Hills (4-8) scored all 10 runs in the fourth inning of the first game on eight hits at Kennedy High. Rick Nadeau had two home runs and eight RBIs for Granada Hills East (8-6).

Woodland Hills East 10-5, Quartz Hill 9-4--Woodland Hills East’s Justin Siegel had two saves to help Woodland Hills East sweep at Antelope Valley College.

Van Nuys Notre Dame 6-12, Panorama City 1-2--Cesar Martinez was five for six with three RBIs for Van Nuys (11-0).
