LOCAL NOTES : Elliott, Mall Advance to Tennis Semifinal

Nicole Elliott of Dana Point upset top-seeded Sandra DeSilva of San Marino, 6-2, 6-0, in a quarterfinal tennis match in the girls’ 18 division of the Southern California junior sectional championships Saturday at Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley.

Elliott, The Times county player of the year after reaching the Southern Section finals, will face Anne Mall of Laguna Niguel in a semifinal match at 11 a.m. today. Mall, the 1990 section champion who played at UCLA this past season, beat San Diego’s Tamara Byrd, 6-0, 6-2.

The two county players remaining in the boys’ 18 division lost. San Clemente’s David Roditi, seeded second, was upset by No. 8 Bryan Juinio of Cerritos, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Anaheim’s Eric Lin fell to Oceanside’s Ross Loel, 6-4, 6-4.

Rick Leach of Laguna Beach and Zina Garrison, seeded fourth, defeated Peter Aldrich and Lise Gregory of South Africa, 6-4, 6-2, in a first-round mixed doubles match Saturday at Wimbledon.

Debbie Graham of Fountain Valley also advanced in mixed doubles joining Jonathan Stark for a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Mark Petchey and Sarah Loosemore of Great Britain.

David Warady’s streak of two consecutive stage victories ended Saturday in the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace. But the Huntington Beach resident was second in the 35.5-mile stage from Stateline, Nev., to Las Vegas, finishing in 5 hours 37 minutes 12 seconds. James (Echo) Edmondson of Los Angeles won in 5:27.55.

Warady is third overall, 1:21:50 behind Scotland’s Al Howie, who was pulled from the race because of severe blisters on his heel.
