Area Teams Entered in Basketball Tournament

Several South Bay boys’ high school teams will compete in the annual Slam-N-Jam Carson Grand Finale basketball tournament Sunday through Wednesday at Carson High.

Six teams from the South Bay are entered in the 16-team tournament, led by Morningside, which won the Division III championship last season. Also competing are Carson, Mira Costa, Serra, Inglewood and Peninsula.

Perennial Southern Section powers such as Lynwood, Long Beach Poly, Dominguez and Long Beach Jordan and teams from Illinois and Alaska also are entered in the tournament, which has a pool-play format.

Opening games Sunday include Serra vs. South Gate at 11 a.m., Carson vs. Oceanside El Camino at 12:20 p.m., Mira Costa vs. Notre Dame at 1:40, Inglewood vs. Long Beach Poly at 4:20, Peninsula vs. Riverside North at 7 and Morningside vs. Long Beach Jordan at 8:20.

Morningside reached the semifinals of the Los Angeles Watts Summer Games before losing to eventual champion Dorsey last week. Jordan advanced to the L.A. Games final but lost to Dorsey, 73-52.

Pool play continues through Tuesday, and the winners of the four pools meet in the semifinals at 1:40 and 3 p.m. Wednesday. The championship game is at 7.

Morningside High basketball standouts Stais Boseman and Donminic Ellison are among a select group of prep players who will participate in the annual Academic Betterment and Career Development Camp Sunday through Wednesday at the UC Irvine Bren Events Center.

The tournament will include 120 of the top prep players in the U.S. and 20 players from Europe.

Boseman averaged 17.7 points to lead Morningside the Division III title last season. The 6-4 guard was also honored as Southern Section Division III player of the year.

Ellison averaged 17.3 points and was named to the All-Southern Section Division III first team.

Loyola Marymount will hold a summer soccer camp for boys and girls age 7-17 from July 18-24.

The cost for the seven-day camp is $250 and includes lunches, a T-shirt and a skills evaluation.

The director is Loyola Marymount men’s soccer Coach Peter Novakovic. The deadline is July 18.

More than 300 inner-city youths between the ages of 11-17 will participate in a beach volleyball program that starts Monday and runs through Aug. 21.

The program is sponsored by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.

Instructors will include players from the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals and the Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn.

The program will be held at Normandale Park, 22400 S. Halldale Ave., in Torrance and Rosecrans Park, 840 W. 149th St., Gardena.

There is no charge. Registration is at the parks.

Loyola Marymount baseball Coach Jody Robinson will hold camps for boys and girls age 8-16.

The camps will run July 20-24 and Aug. 3-7 at Loyola.

The cost is $185 a session and includes lunches, a T-shirt and a skills evaluation.
