The top two finishers in each event qualify for the U. S. team that will compete in the World Junior championships in Seoul, Sept. 16-20, if they meet or exceed the qualifying standard.

Laura Hayward, who graduated from Agoura High last month, placed second in the women’s 10,000 in a personal best of 38 minutes 4.40 seconds, but her time is shy of the World Junior standard of 36:30.

Derek Scurry, who will be a sophomore at Cal State Northridge this fall, finished third in the men’s long jump (wind-aided 24 feet 5 1/2 inches), and Marcus Stokes, a June graduate of Thacher School, advanced to the final of the men’s 110-meter high hurdles (heat-winning 14.77).
