Share

Ryno’s is back, and so is the World Championship Over-the-Line Tournament.

The Old Mission Beach Athletic Club’s 39th annual tournament begins today and Sunday and continues July 18-19 at Fiesta Island on Mission Bay.

Ryno’s Athletic Club (Zane Cramer, Gary Romano and Chuck Cromar) and the Lady Ryno’s (Janet Hunstable, Kim Osuna and Julie Dossert) are the defending men’s and women’s open division champions. Ryno’s Athletic Club finished second and the Lady Ryno’s third in 1990.

They and the other five division champions--Beachmasters (men’s century), This One’s for You Matt (women’s century), Still Too Big (men 40 and older), Never Enough (women 40 and older) and Andy’s Anchients (men 50 and older)--will be challenged by more than 1,125 teams, including 311 from 25 states.

The first weekend is reserved for unseeded and upstart teams. Seeded teams--based on last year’s results--begin play July 18. The championships are July 19.

Play begins each day at 7 a.m. There is no admission or parking charge, but Fiesta Island will be closed to all vehicles at 10 a.m. Free shuttle buses will run throughout the tournament. Pickup locations for the buses are Bonita Cove (near the roller coaster at Mission Beach) and Mission Bay High School (off Grand Avenue). No bottles, dogs or bikes are allowed.

OTL is an abbreviated form softball played by three a side with no bases. A fair ball hit “over the line” and not caught by a defending is a hit. Three hits scores a run. Games are five innings.
