San Diego Volleyball Club Wins National Title at UC Davis Tournament

The San Diego Volleyball Club emerged from 600 teams to win the national championship (16-and-under division) at the UC Davis Volleyball Festival last weekend.

The team came through the losers’ bracket to defeat KAL-JR’s of Kalamazoo, Mich., 16-14, 10-15, 15-11, to force a sudden-death championship game which was won, 15-11, by the San Diego club.

The team is made up of: Jeni Blankenbeckler, Keri Byrne, Kirsten Collingwood, Lindsay Kamen, Carey May, Leanna Miller, Kara Milling, Lara Nelson, Korie Rogers, Kristie Smedsrud.

TRACK AND FIELD

Tony Salerno, an assistant at UC San Diego since 1987, has been named head coach, filling the void created when Mark Stanforth accepted the same position at the Air Force Academy.

SCHOLARSHIPS

San Diego State awarded three scholarships to athletes who finished their NCAA eligibility this past season. Laura Autio (women’s golf), Jeff Belloli (Men’s tennis) and Doug Potter (Men’s volleyball) each received post-eligibility scholarships of $750 plus books to continue their studies at SDSU.
