Tom Dill, junior varsity baseball coach at Notre Dame High, has been promoted to varsity coach, Athletic Director Kevin Rooney said Thursday.

Dill, 29, replaces Bob Mandeville, who resigned last week to become an assistant basketball coach at San Diego State.

“We decided the best thing to do all along was to go with Tom,” Rooney said. “He’s as good a guy as we could have found.”

Dill, who teaches English at Notre Dame, was an assistant baseball coach at Bakersfield College in 1984 and 1985 and graduated from San Diego State in 1986.

Dill was a pitcher for Bakersfield College in 1982 and 1983 after pitching and playing quarterback for South Bakersfield High.

Mandeville, 30, compiled a 103-51-4 record in six seasons, leading the Knights to three league championships.

Last season, Notre Dame compiled a 14-9-1 record, including an 8-4 mark in the Mission League.
