Harvard-Westlake to Hold International Water Polo Event

Harvard-Westlake High’s International Cup water polo tournament begins today and lasts through Sunday. Sixteen teams, including two from Vancouver and one from Hawaii and Germany, will compete.

Matches will begin at 7 a.m. each day.

Erin Boisclair of Studio City played No. 1 singles and led her Southern California Tennis Assn. team to a fourth-place finish in the United States Tennis Assn. under-14 zone tournament in Asheville, N.C., July 12-17. Boisclair was 5-1 in the tournament.

Jessica Kessler of Studio City and Kirsten Gross of Calabasas helped their team to a seventh-place finish. Kessler, who played No. 1 singles, was 6-0, and Gross, who played No. 3 singles, was 4-2.

Sirram Samasunder of Woodland Hills was 3-3 and his team finished fifth. Shera Wiegler of West Hills was 4-2 and her team finished fifth. Dylan Mann of Canoga Park was 3-3 and David Hatkoff of Northridge was 2-4. Their team finished 11th.

Amanda Cey was 2-4 and her team finished ninth.

Niesi Sie of Westlake advanced to the fourth round of the USTA men’s over-45 hard-court championships at the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club on July 13-19. Sie, seeded ninth, lost to Dean Schlobohm of Moraga, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, after advancing the farthest of any area player.

Leslie Balta of Oxnard will compete in the USTA under-12 zone tournament in Tucson, Ariz., beginning Saturday.

Balta was ranked 19th in the SCTA girls’ under-12 division after last season.

Balta lost to third-seeded Katrina Nimmers in the first round of the SCTA sectional tournament June 20-29.

Nicholas Weiss of Tarzana also will compete in the zone tournament. Weiss was ranked third in the SCTA boys’ under-10 age group after last season and won the boys’ under-10 singles at the sectional tournament this season.

Entries are being accepted until Aug. 7 for the Ventura County tennis championships, the sixth Ventura County Grand Prix tournament of the season. The tournament will be played at various courts in Ventura, Aug. 15-16 and 22-23.

Players from throughout the state will compete in open singles, B and C division and doubles for men and women. The event also will feature 35- and 45-and-over singles and doubles.
