LOCAL NOTES : Allison, Booth Reach Semifinals

Alicia Allison of Santa Ana and Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza each won two matches Thursday to advance to a semifinal matchup today in the USGA Girls’ Junior Championship at Indianapolis.

Allison, who reached the semifinals in 1991 before losing, defeated Kelli Kuehne of Dallas, 3 and 1, and Jenny Gray of Martinsville, Ind., 5 and 3.

Booth eliminated Megan Madeo of Hilo, Hawaii, 2 up, and Grace Park of Honolulu, 5 and 4.

Allison, a junior at Foothill High, will face Booth, a junior at Santa Margarita High, in one of today’s semifinals. The winner will be determined Saturday.

Eunice Choi of Laguna Hills lost a third-round match to Erika Hayashida of Peru, 6 and 4.

Tiger Woods of Cypress lost his share of the lead in the third round of the American Junior Golf Assn. Boys’ Junior Championship at Irving, Tex.

Woods shot a two-under-par 68, and was one shot behind Derek Jackson of Dunwoody, Ga., who had a three-under 67. Woods was at four-under 206 for the tournament. Ben Garner of Lake Forest had a 77 for a 224 total.

David Warady of Huntington Beach finished in third place Thursday in the 48th stage of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace to increase his overall lead over Tom Rogozinski of Pittsburgh to 13 hours 36 minutes 54 seconds.

Warady completed the 53.3 miles from Rockville, Ind., to Indianapolis in 9:45:57. The 49th stage will cover 57.85 miles from Indianapolis to Cambridge City, Ind.

Gordon’s Panthers, of Placentia, advanced to the third round of the American Softball Assn. Under 16 National Championship Tournament with two victories in Indianapolis.

Brandee McArthur, who will be a sophomore at Villa Park High School, pitched a two-hitter, striking out six, as the Panthers defeated the Florida Knights, 4-1, in the first game. Kelli Tom, who will be a sophomore at El Dorado, pitched a five-hitter, striking out six, and the Panthers defeated the Kansas Amazons, 5-1, in the second game.

The Panthers play the Maple Grove Express of Pennsylvania today in the third round.

Three Mission Viejo Nadadores divers finished among the top 10 in various categories of the Junior Olympics Diving Championships at Austin, Tex.

Kristin Marquis placed eighth and Erica Sorgi 10th in the girls’ 13-and-under platform and Darcy Stewart was 10th in the girls’ 16-18 one-meter springboard.

Dave Murphy, a five-time Orange Empire Conference coach of the year, will coach women’s cross-country and men’s and women’s track and field at Saddleback College.

Murphy coached women’s cross-country and track at Riverside College the past three years, winning three Orange Empire Conference track titles and two cross-country titles.

Murphy succeeds Gene Gurule, who resigned June 22 to concentrate on his coaching and teaching duties at Mission Viejo High. Gurule coached at Saddleback for the last six years.

Jill Daniels, a Woodbridge High graduate and a former USC standout, has been named as UC Irvine’s assistant women’s volleyball coach.

Daniels has been an assistant with the Huntington Beach High girls’ program and coached the Sunset Volleyball Club for two years.

Daniels takes over from Mary Ellen Murchison, now Cal State Fullerton’s coach.

Cal State Fullerton basketball Coach Brad Holland will hold a day camp for boys and girls ages 9-18 this Monday through Friday in Titan Gym. The $150 fee includes a T-shirt, awards and photographs. Liquid refreshment will be provided, but campers are asked to bring lunch.

Holland also has invited those who registered for Mike Dunleavy’s camps, which were scheduled for July 27-31 but canceled when the camps’ sponsor, Sportsworld Inc., went out of business, to attend the Fullerton camp free of charge.

About 110 youths had signed up for the Dunleavy camps, which were scheduled at nine Southern California locations, including Westminster and Mission Viejo. Though the Lakers were not involved in the Dunleavy camps, they are offering full refunds to those who paid the $250 entry fee by check or cash.

The summer season of Speedway motorcycle racing at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa starts tonight.

In addition to the regular program of speedway-style racing, there also will be races involving Harley Davidson bikes. The first race is at 8 p.m.
