Four of five San Diego-area players advanced to the second round of the USTA Girls 16 Tennis championships at Morley Field. Third-seeded Vanessa Rooks of Spring Valley was the only one to be extended to three sets. Eighth-seeded Marisa Velasco of Chula Vista, 12th-seeded Molly Gavin of Escondido and unseeded Erin Lowery of La Jolla were also winners. Mary Beth Maggart of San Diego lost in straight sets.

GOLF

Debbie Kim, Megan Mahoney, Emily Tierney and Jill Wery try to become only the second San Diego County contingent to win the 15th annual Girls Junior Americas Cup when stroke play begins on Tuesday.

Kim (Poway), Mahoney (Chula Vista), Tierney (San Diego) and Wery (San Diego) begin the 54-hole tournament Tuesday at Escondido Country Club, the first time the tournament has been hosted by the San Diego County Junior Golf Assn. It won’t return to San Diego for another 18 years.

San Diego’s only victory took place in the second Cup, in 1979, in Olympia, Wash., and all the other competitions have been won by the Northern and Southern California associations.

Team members were selected by their respective associations. All girls are 13-17 years old.

The opening ceremony for participating U.S. states (12), Canadian provinces (two) and countries (three) takes place at 5 p.m. tonight and the tournament begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. Admission is free.
